This part is difficult for most drivers-in that they are not diplomatic at the time. Take more time to think-out what caused the situation, and what, if anything you should say to your company. Being cool-headed even when they are wrong is a must. The company people are like fish in a bowl, they all swim together and know what's going on and being said. Once you lose your cool to a dispatcher or anyone in the office, they all know about it. You have to show them you are as smart as they are or smarter by being patient and level-headed.
I always keep the back door open. By that I mean; if I cannot work out a situation with a company, I have one readily handy to go to work for.

I think it would be better to say 'most' trucking companies instead of all. But I agree that there is a slant toward hiring new drivers at 26-29 cents a mile to start over say-42-45 cents a mile. Most of this is attributable to mega carriers (Schneider, Swift, USA Truck, Covenant, CR England, US Express) and the rest of the run-of-the-mill megas. The problem lay partly in insurance regulations which dictate who the companies can hire and not hire, and also in the subsidizing by the government (both state and federal) who issue grants and pay these large companies to train the unemployed.
A recruiter told me companies receive approximately 75% of the cost to train a driver from the govern't. So if you train 2,000 drivers a year, and the drivers pay the remaining 25% via low pay per mile, that is a lot of money per year involved. These new drivers haul freight from (as stated) 26-29 cents a mile. Those are about 1989-1991 rates. I made 30 cents for Carretta in 1991, and when I returned to trucking this year, Schneider offered me 29 cents to pull a tanker.
USA Truck offered me (13 years prior experience) 28 cents, and PAM wanted me to pay around $4,000 for thier school, and after 6 weeks, work for 26 cents with a penny raise at the end of a year.
So, why not hire a new driver, or one that you can throw into that category (such as myself) to pull freight cheap rather than pay an experienced driver say-36-45 cents a mile?poohbear3636 Thanks this. -
[ havent been on this site long and curious hoe the company can pin you to your comments, maybe im missins something. i personally dont work for the companyies that pay for mislead people think thier going to make a large paycheck driving a truck. and paying a redicoulise cost foe inaddiqute scool. and then suppose to futher your exspiernce with a poor exsquse for a driver and have you train and evaluate your performanc (not saying all trainers are sorry but had a conversation who had worked wirh swift immediate after school and tried to do better by swapping to werner. i lked to passed out to find that they were being payed less thab more than 25 years ago. ( .19 to 23 cents a mile and only doing on a big week 2000 miles and not getting home at thier request when do home time. (3 to 4 weeks ) out. tal and treat them like ####. put them in impassible dot equipment

we drive them off by focusing on efficiency & expertise as opposed to spelling, grammar & credit-history passed off as "background investigation" ==> if you ever want to twist their mind suggest that doing "credit history" to see who they can steal from has been added to course of study at most truck-driving schools
what is even weirder than what we are talking about is why that does not happen 100-%
all sales dept person + HR and so on live in fantasy, what you state here is why I am working my way to fracwater vacuum tanker ..... one major just sold the entire yard at Barnett to set up operations at EFS .....
most equipment looks ideal in the banners,.....maybe I should look a little closer but be careful, most of the operations have rules against camera -
If a majority in the trucking industry are so unhappy why not start/join a union

When you "CYA" there's absolutely nothing any of these companies can do other than suspect based on suspicion...that alone is worth nothing. Don't have to fear anything...the word FEAR itself to me means this...False Evidence Appearing Real. Prove what you suspect, then you might have something to go on, otherwise just be still. To all of you companies that are reading these posts on here, let me personally give you something to chomp at the bits about. Without your Drivers pulling your freight, your company is worthless, meaningless, it stands for nothing and represents nothing...got it?
Now having written that in the above, how do you companies plan on keeping the drivers that you have before they get fed with your BS? Well, let's begin with some basic things, stop treating them like a number everytime they call in, your drivers have god given names, get to know them as a person instead of a truck and trailer number. Where's the respect and dignity in that? Drivers are not door mats for Office personnel to walk on. When your having a bad day for whatever reason, don't take it out on the nearest person next to you, you can let them know that your out of sorts before blasting someone away with your double edged tongue.
Next thing is, don't let your job title /position go to your head and think that you do not have to listen to what your drivers have to say, they are the backbone to your companys success. Their input concerning the going ons of your company should be valued far more than what someone from in the office might tell you, why you might ask, their out there hands on per se with first hand knowledge. When you disregard, dismiss or even fluff off what one of your drivers is trying to relay to you not considering the information as being valid, you might be short changing yourself. It takes everyone in a company to make things run smoothly as it ought to be, Everybody is a limb and a branch in the tree that makes it stand up strong and high. In other words people, Teamwork is not requested, it should be required and mandated leaving your problems at home while your at work. There is a time and place for everything.
Drivers are not robots, there human breathing beings just as you are. Everyday you should be exercising some gratitude instead of thinking how hard can i push this driver this week to make me this amount more in total revenue. What i feel you should be doing with your drivers that you still have is being more humble towards them, afterall, consider who puts on all them miles for you every week that gives you the living and lifestyle that you have. "Gratitude" trucking company owners, demonstrate that to your drivers in showing them how much you do appreciate and value them. And if you do that you may not find your company name listed on here having negative things to write about. A little food for thought wouldn't you say?

Hi Ex-Carretta driver....been there too around the same time. That's when trucking was fun. Yeah, when I tell people how much we made with them back then, they mostly don't believe me. Luckily, I still have most of my paystubs from Carretta and can prove to them that I was telling the truth. After 20 years on the road, I have yet to hear of a company that will start you out above 29 cent/mile. I find that laughable. I expect to be paid for my service, experience, and clean record. I surely don't work for less than minimum wage ( that what it comes out to if you don't run at least 5000 miles/week at 29 cent/mile).
