Yes some will give you a go if your a newbie i was given that opportunity at LW's in Utah although i did sort of have hauling experience i just hadn't done otr on a weekly basis but did know the in's and out's of delivering to warehouses and dealing with lumpers and receiving.

Basically meaning that instead of hauling a truck full of frieght (from the front of the trailer to the rear doors and most, if not all, going to one location), you'll only haul a few pallets....most of the time. And in most cases, it's multiple stops....ten boxes here, 2 pallets there, etc. -
Thanks, that really helps got my CDL in 2009 but it was hard to find a trucking job, you are right every where I looked said 1-2 driving exp so I didn't bother, had to get a job have my kids to worry about now lost my job for about a month really want to get into it, went with a friend on a long run for about 13 days around Canada and USA learned alot even improved on my driving, don't really want to do highway but if I don't have a choice I will it's good pay, for new drivers with no exp please don't do highway alone make sure you see it first totally different from the city. Thanks again bro you just opened my mind coming Monday I will call companies even they ask for 1-2 years exp.
JCB & Associates Thanks this. -
Thanks for this thread. Took awhile to wade through so many posts but worth getting the info. I am hoping to get my CDL on my own this summer and would like to try and find something that is not OTR. I am not opposed to OTR but my family would rather have me home if possible.

make sure find out about the school you are going to join, lots of bulls--- schools out there, everybody is in this to make money, remember your safety is very important, not till I went on the road with my friend I had no clue he teach me alot, 50% of trucking I learned from him in two weeks. Some of the school just teach you how to drive, than finding a job after is so hard because nobody wants new drivers, you got to have at least 1-2 experience how are you suppose to have experience if nobody hires you, people are hiring for long haul make sure ask about it and go your self and experience it, it is not as easy as people say it is if your are new. Good luck.
egander1 Thanks this. -
Joeg, thanks for the information. If you know of a good school in Texas (especially south texas) that you would recommend, I would appreciate any insight. There are so many that it is easy to get lost trying to sift through everything. I don't know anyone first hand to have as a sounding board and am glad I came across this forum. I am in the Rio Grande valley but will travel if necessary to attend schooling elsewhere. thanks again for the reply.
