Attention all rookies and wannabes: Local Jobs for New Drivers

Frannyde, Luckily there are many couples who've trained together as we are finding out since our post on here. Seems there are companies out there that understand our request and don't mind training us together. Thank you for your opinion. Stay safe.

Anyone here have insight on where to look for schooling and companies in Tennessee ? I just relocated and left a 10 year Teamster warehouse job in Southern California. Been here about a week and need to get started on something. I have 2 little ones and would like to chase the pipe dream of being home once in a while. Im in the Clarksville area which is about 35 mins outside of Nashville. I think Driving would be good for me .. Money making isnt my primary concern right away ... I just want to get in somewhere I can build experience and see my family once in a while. Any Advice is greatly appreciated..

Has anyone been to or know someone who has been to "Florida Coast Career Tech" school in Jacksonville FL? I'm starting their 8 week course soon and was wondering. Using my Post/9-11 GI Bill. I'm retired military wanting to Drive the Big Rigs.

 

Actually I just went there! Great course! Needs a little tweaking if you ask me and the guys in my class. Too much sitting around and needs to be more instructors out on the skills pads. Also they SHOULD offer job placement as well. But all in all very good for an 8 week course. And they spent way too much money one the facility and really should maintain the trucks better.

 

hehe, I saw the new facility when I went there about 2 weeks ago to sign up. It's a brand new building. There were guys out on the pad sitting in chairs napping while one was practicing backing up. And that place is way out in the sticks. lol

 

Thank you .. lots of good listings .. looks like I'm not near any schools within commuting distance .. might have to deal with a training company and kiss the kids goodbye for a year.

 

Don't train with a trucking company!!! Only the forced training they make you do when hired. I know a guy who commuted on the weekends. M-F he got a school discount at a hotel off of I-295 and 103rd Street. 8 weeks went by very quickly!

 

I will do some more research and see if I can make it work without the whole signing my life away for a year. Im thinking after the first I might drive down to some of these schools to see what they offer. My credit isnt in the best shape tho and I just got laid off so money is limited. But maybe they can help me make it work. Gotta atleast try right
