@Toomanybikes you crack me up. @snowy made a good point too......
Shifting a manual IS automatic and if it ain't, then you're doing it wrong. Usually these threads are in the new driver forum. That's why I quit going there.....too many know it alls typing from mother's basement.

That guy that thought he knew about F1.... Whatever his name is..... Before he got shown the door, he assured us that "autos will out shift the best shifters". I just begged to differ is all.

As for rest of you..... Because you asked..... That can't shift, well I guess that's why your bosses buy autos. Everyone gets what they deserve in life. Maybe a little more pride in the job and you could be a "best shifter" too. In the meantime, I have no time for attitudes like yours. I prefer an employee who strives for perfection and aims to be the best. Yes I know they are rare and that's why there are autos.

@striker you are correct..... The only auto I've driven was a long time ago. I think it was a 6 speed Allison in a Freightliner and it was OK for what it was but I just kept asking myself WHY WHY WHY IS THIS NECESSARY? And then I remembered I was in a motor home and suddenly it made sense.

I'm happy you like your trans, I just don't see the need is all. So long as I'm paying the bills, I will choose simplicity and reliability and the computer will be the driver.

And I deserve a brand new Volvo with iShift, inverter and fridge.... I am very appreciative of the awesome equipment that the company provides to us and that I need not be some old buggy whip holder. I can leave that old tech in the past and focus on being the best I can be without care nor need for a buggy whip.

Again, the tools one uses do not define us, nor the quality of work we do, nor the pride we have in a job well done.

Thanks for proving my point... :)

I hopped gears once a while. But not too often.

The most egerous case of skipping gears was taking off bobtail in 5th high with brown smoke pouring from the clutch and going straight to 9th until the fuel pump quit at 126 mph. I managed to beat a V8 race car that day off the light.

That was back in 1995 those cars with the V8's had so much emissions loaded onto them it's not hard to take em on the 1/4 mile. But it's like watching paint dry in those days waiting for the bobtail to get up there.

Today I won't even think about it it's not worth it.

My Century never shifted gears in auto it went through each gear carefully. No problem. Now when it was in manual usually it's either snow, split ice or backing or mountain work downgrade. Everything else was in full auto

Im sorry to hear of the issues in today's automatic trucks. You would think back in 2001 the engineers recognized they did a very good job with few exceptions on our Auto and will leave it alone.

    Apparently not.

Give me a grand old Diamond T, autocar or a old 260 Pete. something along those lines for a hour. Make a old man smile again.

Grind gear a does not mean you PRO trucker at shifting. I was shifting by the book.
Cluch- gear out - cluch- gear in
For downshift: cluch - gear out - rev - cluch - gear inn. ALL THE TIME ! THIS IS HOW STATE WANT YOU TO SHIFT !
    Hated it...
Grinding gear? Sorry but YOU FAILED
Using trottle to shift? FAILED AGIN !

I WISH ALL YOU ""SUPER TRUCKERs" would go to school and try to take CDL prom begining. FAILED would be 85% I guarantee it.

IS NOT THAT THE POINT ? By NOT using CLUCH you pretty much do what auto in truck does!
It's float gear, skips gear etc...
