Hi, I just wanted to comment on transmissions since I drove my first automatic tractor trailer last week. V-E-R-Y enjoyable experience. Its like having someone do the shifting for you. I drove on flat highways with it and almost forgot I was driving a truck! When you don't have to shift gears it makes it nice for the beginner, its just one less thing to do and allows the driver to concentrate on the road in front more. I don't understand why there arent more of them on the roads. Wow, in one month of driving I have seen and heard about a lot of accidents involving trucks and triaxles. New drivers- be carefull out there and keep looking in those mirrors! Susan.

autos should only be allowed for us wore out drivers... when your right shoulder and left knee are toast, you get a new auto truck.

my opinion rookies should drive a manual trans. at least their first year think about it you go to school for three weeks and learn how to shift a truck then you come out and get an auto your going to forget

    What Buno said

Oh and there are not more of them on the road because they are expensive to replace and repair.

I had one try on an automatic, and I liked it a lot. Very smooth. Very nice to drive. Forgot what type it was.

I like the Volvo 780 engine and the manual 9 speed, if I had to drive the manual.

Not really..... The transmissions are no different than any other transmission and one of the main reasons that the auto transmission were brought in because the drivers cannot abuse them as they can a standard. We have been running auto transmissions now for quite a while and while there have been some electronic problems here and there with the shift tops, the costs and no different than having some bonehead damaging transmissions as they did in the past by driving like an idiot.

My left knee says "automatic". The driving in places like Pennsylvania part of my brain says" are you nuts to want to drive an automatic?????" I drove one years ago when I was on the oil truck, and I distinctly remember sliding all over the place in the snow in a ten wheeler.
Maybe if I ever move to Iowa ill feel differently....

Its just as easy to drive like an idiot in a truck with an automatic.

Not all automatics are alike. I've driven them in Michigan winters and never once had an issue with losing traction or having the truck do something I didn't want it to do.
