What part of that is difficult for you?Oldironfan, mitmaks, stwik and 3 others Thank this. -
I had a transmission that wouldn't shift. Eaton Ultra shi*t. I pulled over, restarted the truck, happened again. I disconnected power, still wouldn't shift. Tried it again, suddenly truck wouldn't start.
150 mile tow, new clutch, new input shaft, some new programming, a week of downtime and I got going again.
Our company has had a number is xy shifters go out as well.
They've now switched to freightliners with DT12 trannies. Too new to have too many problems, we'll see how those go.Steel Dragon Thanks this. -
We were running a pair of trucks with Eaton ultras, one blew up the transmission, and I hated the one I had so much I never want to drive another automated.
The Freedomline equipped trucks worked out better, but Eaton took care of their competition in court, effectively silencing Rockwell, but also leaving it open to Volvo and Daimler, their 12 speed offerings look more than superficially like the Freedomline.Steel Dragon Thanks this. -
The automatic transmission themselves are very heavy duty.
But as the other person said they are more complicated and more to go wrong with them.
Electronics are a bad problem because with a bad ground or chafed wire you're stuck. That seems silly and ridiculous to be stuck in some kind of situation that's going to cost you money when you compare that to a manual transmission.
But the real problem is that when an automatic breaks, it is big $$$.Dan.S and Steel Dragon Thank this. -
I'm driving Freightliner with their DT12 auto shift. So far it been trouble free have 167,000 miles so it still new. I believe the clutch has a 300,000 miles warranty. Having a transmission that can talk to the engine make a big difference. So it know the engine RPMs are to low or it can turn on the engine brake between gears if needed. The truck and transmission also keep brakes applied when stop so you don't roll back. Once the truck starts to pull the brakes release. You can't get that kind of stuff from Eaton unless the all the truck parts can talk to each other.

my company has SOME new T880's with ultrash@t eaton transmissions, the 18 speed variety. if the boss ever wants to put me in one, no thanks. if it dont have a clutch it aint truckin. seriously though i know of a few very experienced drivers that he tried putting in those trucks. i know of one that told the boss to take the POS and shove it, now he's driving a 2004 international eagle with a 13 and is quite happy with it. as for me, i love the 18's nothing better then being able to split gears with a heavy load. best transmission eaton has ever built. they are the best.
i have been told that the auto transmissions have real shortcomings when dealing with surge loads..... we haul milk. im driving a 2006 peterbilt day cab..... older school cat engine NO emssions.... NO DEF.... and NO autoshift. truck has some miles on her but still have quite a bit of life left. 690K miles.
and the exhaust and jake sound amazing, it has dual stacks. i was driving a 2010 kenworth T660 but i got slip seated when that truck had to go into the shop several times for regen problems. i told the boss i kind of like this older truck with no emissions crap. he said i could stay in it, sure im fine with that. the trucks sounds like rolling thunder with that jake, wake the dead none of this silent jake crap that sounds like a wet fart.Steel Dragon Thanks this. -
I made a delivery once. IN my home city. There was a volvo that spent the night at receiver i was delivering too. I had to wait for the volvo to unload. But since his truck wouldn't start. Transmission said it was in reverse when his lever was in neutral. I have no idea how long it took him to deliver. I think the forklifts eventually unloaded him from the street. Where he was parked.

yet companies still buy these POS trucks, including the company i work for. what's going to happen to all of these automatic transmission/emissions engine trucks when get to be older. dont know if someone is going to want to fix a truck with all of that B.S. on it when it gets to be 15+ years old and has a million miles, a truck that would otherwise likely run fine will meet an early end.
Steel Dragon Thanks this. -
Those pos trucks save the company their major expense..fuel.
