A question for those of you that are familiar with automatic transmissions, especially Canadians or any of you that know how to drive on ice and snow and have ever driven when it’s 25 degrees out and raining on an already snow covered road IE glare ice that’s wet and every change in steering or gear choice will make a mess of things. What now?

Say your pulling a hill or crossing a downhill ice covered bridge and the drives break loose for a bit and you have to steer out of it and let off the throttle for a moment will the auto transmission make a complete mess of it if it changes gears at the worst moment?

I’ve tiptoed across some long ice covered bridges in Pa and the last thing I want is an automatic downshift to break the drives loose.

Most of them have a manual override.

Say you're coming up to a bridge in winter, you should be able to select manual mode so it won't shift.

25 degrees and raining is time to park. But to to your actual question, most autos have a manual mode, though I've heard some carriers lock you out of that. Still no substitute for a clutch pedal though, it seems the little robot working the clutch doesn't always do it right.

I have the Detroit DT12 automatic. When you take your foot off the pedal the transmission just coast. It doesn't shift gears or anything. Just make sure your don't have the Jake brakes turned on otherwise they will come on automatically and that would be a mess.
Anytime you want to pull the trailer just tap the pedal and the DT12 transmission will engage again and you just keep going. If you touch the brake pedal the transmission will engage also.

So just take you foot off the pedal and let the truck roll over the bridge

The Eaton 13 that was in the 2016 daycab Pete I was driving you could have the Jake on and as long as the cruise control button was on(cruise didn't have to be set) the Jake wouldn't engage until the brake was touched. I only was in that truck w year and wasn't in to much bad weather with it. The rail yards I ran out of didn't usually want us in there until they cleaned up. What little bad weather I was in it did fairly well.
