I think there's a lot of reason to be very concerned about what other business mistakes you're going to make, if you're just going to limit yourself to 11'6" trucks right out of the gate for a very small reason relative to the whole business
You need to know how limiting that is as far as trucks that are reduced from the pool you can purchase from. This is the kind of thing that you should just know if you're going to make this a business, and then on top of that, even if you were to shrug off how important this kind of understanding is with a "hey not everybody knows everything" approach, you should be willing to listen to all the posters in this thread (not me) who have made this a business and learned themselves from smaller mistakes than this huge one you're making right out of the gate.

You're going to save a hard maximum of four figures to cost yourself at least 5 figures down the road, at a bare minimum.
AModelCat Thanks this. -
Go at least 14 feet. Most van or reefer trailers will be right around the 13'4 inch mark and even if you dont own one there will be a time when you want to back one into the shop for a delivery when outside conditions are not favorable.

Again, I thank all the Hands who took the time, made the effort to to post and share opinions/advice. Very much appreciated.
I do want to point out to "JustCallMeDriver" that you're making a lot of assumptions and lecturing me about making mistakes "out the door" is really stretching it. You don't know me or anything about me, or have any idea of what previous experience I have. You're assuming a lot.
With 11+ years as a Teamster and another 18+ years as an O/O I took early retirement at 56 years old. At that time I had over 663K in cash/stocks/residental rental property -
Continuing on...........My house and land is paid in full. I just wrote a check for 285,000.00 to place my brother in Assisted Living, Memory Care. All I'm trying to do is recoup some of that money, along with the hits of unpaid rent on the residential units, while my health and ability holds out.
The original post was about how high a door I need for an outbuilding. Previous post detailed I want to get an older, PRE- ELD and Emissions rig.
Already know that will keep me out of Calif., no problem. Idea was to get the outbuilding built before I get the tractor. Plan is to find a decent tractor, rebuild everything so it's basically new and reliable. Run it for 3, maybe 4 years and retire again. Replenish my cash reserves.
All I',m trying to do is figure out how high a door I need at the least $$$.
Again, I thank everyone who took the time to post with advice. -
How could you possibly have been an Owner Operator for 18 years and not know what size door you need for a tractor? Also, if you're so rich why are you trying to save a measly few hundred dollars for a smaller opening that will cost you more headache than its worth? Sorry, I'm calling BS here.
Roberts450, Rollr4872, Ruthless and 1 other person Thank this. -
