    Realistically, and Legally,

What is the average amount of miles per day of a Regional driver, & a OTR Nation-wide driver?

I would think, 650 to 700 if everything goes right.

How much time is "average" to wait at docks? Not the crazy long waits when everything goes wrong, but the average time?

    Thanks, Katy

I have had them as little as 10 minutes to 10 days. they all vary. as for miles I used 55 for 10 hrs to guestimate my daily and was usually close more under than over, but it's better plan for less than to have to go over when planning stops.

Average your speed 5-10mph under what ur truck goes so if you run 65 average ur mph at 60. Allows for stops and traffic. If your in mountains say 55 if your heavy... but normal in 10hours i do about 625.

I don't think people paid attention to what she said. But Realistically you can expect to avg about 300 miles per day regionally and 500 per day OTR. Avg dock time is 3 hours. Most depends on if your company has a lot of drop and hook accounts.

Thanks for the replies. Good to know that I should guesstimate under the regulated speed. On the regional 300 miles at 55 mph-- so you mean 5.75 hours is all you would be doing? Or is this a traffic issue?

Oh, I guess it is you have to do it to find out. It is just a bit hard to make any kind of future plans if I do not know what the paycheck is going to be like-- right?

Just depends on how the company is set up. Some regional has a set limit on how are they go out. The company I worked at didn't go over 600 miles from home base. That was more a dedicated regional. We would deliver 2 or 400 miles away find a back haul or come back empty. Your companies ability to find loads after you have unloaded will cut into your time. Sometimes you will do a 400 mile load but if they don't have a load until the next day that's all you get.

Another factor is After unloading that take you 3 hours then you go to pick up your back haul it takes you 1 hour. The time has cut into your 11 hours of drive time. If you are doing regional at the low end I would guesstimate 1500-2000 miles a week and OTR 2200 -2500 a week.

The up and down of our miles and pay is why most don't last long in this industry. Unless you have a dedicated or Salary run. Your pay checks will look like a roller coaster and is in the hands of your fleet manager and ability of your company to keep you moving. Some are good at it. Some are not. Most of your time you will watch your hours available to drive ticking away because you have no load or your load has too much time and you have to wait to deliver. Most don't pay you any extra if your 500 mile load is given a 3 day apt time. So its just up to you to do your homework and hope for the best.

Most folks cannot run 10 or 11 hours continuously, unless they've had the bladder of a horse surgically implanted! LOL! There's breaks, meals, traffic, accidents - getting off of the highway into city traffic, fuel stops - all kinds of fun stuff to break up your day.

I used to get routed up a combination of US and state highways into Bloomington IN a few years ago. Starts well enough... 55 mph speed limit. Then it got fun. There's a few small towns along the way, so drop it to 30 for a few miles - but that was 20 years ago. NOW - there are subdivisions every few miles in between, so lots of restrictions on speed, plenty of traffic, and you don't want to be doing 55 through one of those developments when some kid runs out into the street. Even though the highest speed limit was 55 - I used to plan on running 35 across the route. BTW... there aren't any alternatives in that part of the world - I64 and I65 around it (plus the additional 2-lane roads) would have taken a couple of hours longer.
