It seems that everybody, including myself, loves to tell the story about the 1 million mile motor they have or ones just like their's that went the distance without being opened up.

But how common is it really?

It seems that engines often get rebuilt because they are apart to fix a problem like a head gasket and since its apart anyways and the miles are creeping up, it gets put back together with new parts to save on possible future labor and downtime costs.

My first Series 60 went 535,000 miles and then I found slipper bushing pieces in my oil. So I inflamed it because two holes were affected and the rest probably weren't far behind.

My second Series 60 went 100,000 miles and dropped a liner. Detroit bought me 6 new liners and rings as part of a recall.

My current Mercedes has 780,000 miles on it and has developed an oil leak at a head gasket. Still haven't decided on how to proceed.

How about you? How many miles on your motor when you you framed it and why?

My class 8 trucks generally get an inline/in frame at about 450 000 miles.
As you say it is usually just done because of some other work being done that necessitates the truck being down for a time that enables an in frame.
My trucks generally gross at between 110 000lbs and 130 000lbs running from sea level to 5800ft over a 425 mile route.
Our diff ratios are typically between 4,1 and 4,3 so the about 20% more engine revs per mile over a std 3,55 rear.
This is hard on a truck so the best we usually get is about 6 to 700 000 miles before they start chomping oil.

at 780 000 miles I would think about inframing it but if you don't plan on keeping the truck much longer then dont just fix the leak and if they find a droped liner then diff story but 1million miles is not that uncommon i have put head gaskets on trucks with over 900000 and just rod and mains still running at 1.5 but a lot of luck involved with that to i have changed motors with 400 000 due to rod cumming out the side

i keep wondering the same thing ....as i am close to 1.5 million without an inframe ....new head at 1 mil and i suspect rods and mains were done sometime as they still look good with no wear metals in oil and very little oil consumption
have scheduled the inframe this fall because a minor leak at head and by crankshaft wondering if i am pressing my luck or just over reactiong

no i would say even pressing your luck at 1.5 mill for some people that would be 2 or 3 inframes even if it sends a rod out the side it more then earned its money

That just something that don't have an answer. I have seen trucks go 2 Million miles. I drove a real nice Pete, blew up with 6000 miles on it. Mack's seem to last longer. I would in frame @ 550, myself." It ain't broke, just tired".

depends on the love it gets and the oil.

i've seen a big difference in how different brands act in a engine.

the best performer i've seen is mobil 1. isx motors don't seem to like anything else. they run hot. and sound like a bomb ready to blow up.

the company i work for uses shell. i can shut the truck off. 6 hours later start her back up and the water still reads 150. with mobile 1 she gets cold after 2 hours.

If you are between 500 & 750K miles I would start planning for an in-frame at a shop you trust. Better to plan than be stuck out there on the side of the road with a blown motor at the mercy of a shop you don't know. Use the good oil and put a micro oil filter system on.

I got 1.5 million on my 60 series (1995 FLD120) before inframing it. Finally sold the truck after 2.25 million. Engine was running fine, just everything else was falling apart faster than I could fix it. I'd love to have another old FLD to rebuild and keep off the road till it was finished but I have absolutely no time for that kinda project.
