What is an average week like for an over the road driver. I will be going to class for Prime in a couple of weeks, and just want to know what i can expect to do for an average week.

Loads, time off, how much drive time per day. Any off time,

plus I want to know, it says 3 weeks on and 3 days off. Ok can I take those three days anywhere i want. Where do I park the semi while on the three days, is renting a car the best option to get around on those days

An average week ? Hard to say, you might run hard and be begging for a day off. You might load and empty every 24 hrs, or run 1800 miles in 3-4 days. You may get 3 days to go 600 miles, you may have to adjust your sleep schedule back and forth. Trucking is 24/7.

On days off, yes you can request home time anywhere. But you do have to secure your truck, you are responsible for it. You will need to get creative sometimes. (as to where to park).

3 weeks on and 3 days off isn't what it implies. Your time off is thanks to 34 hour resets. You can take as much time off as you want, just don't expect to make any money. The more you roll, the more money you're going to make.

On that note, downtime is part of the industry. There's alot of "hurry up and wait" with the job. You're going to have loads with way too much time on them, and you're going to spend alot of time at customers. Certain items are a must have IMO, because your truck will become a home away from home.

    ~ refrigerator
    ~ microwave
~ a supply of food and drinks
    ~ TV
~ xbox, playstation, dvd/blue ray player
    ~ laptop
    ~ phone
~ a good mattress (get rid of the jail house style mattress that comes with the truck)
~ A good set of sheets and a comforter. I love my 800 thread count sheets.

If you asked twenty different Big truck truck drivers to
describe an "average week", chances are excellent that
    you'd receive twenty different descriptions.
"Average" and "normal" may not even really exist in the
    Big truck truckin' industry.
The name of the day seems unimportant after awhile, and
days are only refered to by their number in the month.
    Sunday?
    Monday?
    Tuesday?
    Etc., etc., etc., etc..
All the same except for the name.

my average week would go as follows, i will leave the house at 1300 and drive to the trailer park location about 10 miles from my house, Afton tn. ( i bob tailed home from there when dropped trailer ) i would connect to trailer and do a pre trip. i would then drive the 90 miles to the shipper, Mascot tn for a 1500 appointment. after 1 hour load time i then leave shipper and head towards Laredo,tx. I would drive til about 1800 and have supper. i then drive to west memphis,ar. we have an operating center where i fuel. i then leave operating center (oc) and continue driving to Arkadelphia,ar. this is where i spend the night at the end of my 14 hr day. ( takes full 11 hrs to drive to this point ). around 1200 my 10 hr break is up and i start my pre trip and then begin driving. around 1630 or so i'll be in dallas at our oc fueling again. i leave the oc and then head south on 35 towards laredo. about 30 minutes after stopping for fuel i'll stop again at italy,tx. i'll stay here about an hour and eat supper. ( sometimes i go to willies place which is now a petro and i'll stop there for supper ) the reason for this is to miss or only have to drive in Austin traffic after rush hour. i'll continue onto Laredo and arrive around 0030. i'll drop my load and shut down for 10 hr break. on my breaks i'll eat if need to watch tv (when in laredo) and shower. for the return trip i'll do the same just in reverse order and each day i'll use less of my 14 but all of my 11 or near bouts. usually back home thursday night off friday saturday and sunday and leave again on monday. almost 2700 miles every week and atleast 2 nights at home usually 3.

    +1.

And I'll add, for every chuckle head on here who whines about everything (if its so bad why are they still doing it? but thats another story) there are probably just as many folks who are doing fine (if not well) and have better things to do with their time then waste it on a message board.

the best way to answer your ? is simply go do it, you could have a fm who will run you to death, or you may have one who makes u sit 24 hours after every load ( u dont want that) but i am assuming you will be running solo you will have 10 hrs off every day, you will learn that "prime time" when your chances of finding a parking spot in a truck stop completely vanishes, and when to start looking for a rest area or off ramp. You need to let alot of things roll off your back if your a constant whiner and complainer and think the world owes you something you are gonna have a hard time, and the BIGGEST PIECE OF ADVISE IS YOUR FLEET MANAGER IS WHAT FEEDS YOU DONT PISS THEM OFF :) have fun
