I can't express the seriousness of this situation enough. I'm not exactly ranting here. This is more of a concerned post and if this isn't allowed please let me know and it can be deleted.
I almost had a head on with a big rig on this highway because of how tight the road is. Please please take the Sacramento to Placerville route instead if you have to get through Cool. I'm also not the only one on the Divide who has concerns about this. You can see in the video for yourself how dangerous it is.
Now I'll give credit where credit is due. I've seen a few of these truckers shift and adjust their load (or whatever it is that you guys do) and sometimes they have been able to get through this highway just fine. But if you get stuck you will be given a ticket and inspection by a CHP commercial unit. The survey crews have been working at the top of the 49 canyon on some sort of project at the signal. I hope that they are working on better signage. Clip posted below of what happened the other day, plus you can find more clips of big rig drivers having problems with this road. Just some friendly advice. Not really a rant.
Avoid Highway 49 Auburn to Cool, CA if you can.

These are "switchback curves". I thought this was a weather related post about high winds.
I will assume these drivers pass signs that indicate "trucks over xx feet prohibited"? You can't help those who can't read/comprehend English or won't heed warnings.QuietStorm Thanks this. -
I couldn't see what exactly was hanging that truck up.....

There is a sign but it's incredibly small and difficult to see. I doubt most of these truckers even see the sign. -
I'm glad I don't have to pay for maintenance on that truck....I was really waiting for the driveline to go rolling across the road.. disappointing
lovesthedrive and rabbiporkchop Thank this. -

ca has a rating system for all roads get a map at scale house. lot of 'em have 30' pin to rear axle. thats why the 'cal rig' is a single drive w/ 2 20 footers. they have a law 48' wagon must have rear axle up 3' but they don't enforce it on interstates. you piss 'em off out in the boonies somewhere and you are looking at paying for a wrecker to pull your trailer out (stupid idea) or you hear of them demanding to cut up the trailer though this may be fiction. every down rated road i have seen has the restriction sign on it so no excuses. of course if you have cal plates then just keep on truckin w/ that rope holdin' the cargo and that old freightliner smokin w/o dpf----hmmm sounds like sour grapes
