Hi all, have a specific question regarding AZ renewals that I couldn't get a clear answer from ServiceOntario. My license is valid until the end of 2026 but I am not working as a driver anymore, nor do I plan on it.

I understand the medical and written test requirements in order to renew my AZ, but if I choose not to, and let it downgrade back to a G on my next license renewal, will I have to go through all of the pre licensing steps in the future to upgrade my license again, or would the medical and written test be all that is required? If so, does that change with the amount of years that the license has been inactive?

My understanding is you would have to go through all the steps again and with how easy the tests are now . I would just go and do the tests and medical . Air brake is a 30 min online video and the written test is just signs ,rules and regulations and that’s been dumbed down so much why not just go do the tests and keep your AZ . Especially if you even have the thought of getting back into trucking down the road . why take the risk of having to do it all over again. When i renewed last year i didn’t even have to study the books like i use to and it was pretty much all coupling questions

Another thing to think about is if you’re out of driving a large commercial truck for a long period of time it could be difficult finding a decent company who will hire you with no recent experience . I’ve read numerous threads online of drivers who had years of experience , then decide to leave trucking then want back into trucking . only to be told you don’t have any recent experience and we can’t hire you . not saying you will not find a job but even the mega’s want recent experience or you have to start out as a newbie all over again

Wow, they dumbed it down, the tests? They were pretty dumb, I thought, back when I got my CDL in 2005. Guess that explains a lot of the newbies we hear about and often see for ourselves on the highway.

Before Doug Ford changed everything it was always smart to go through both books before the test because you never knew what questions you would get . my buddy who has to get his license for a township job so he could drive the plow trucks got the answers from his driving school . the test was exactly the same questions all about coupling/uncoupling procedures and what to do before dropping a trailer . Guy at work had the same test . Air brake is now a video you watch online with no written tests
. Apparently the government thinks a video showing you how everything works will stop the new canadians from getting into wrecks
