Hello I have had my B for years an went for the written test to get my A. I only had to take the combination portion being I have air on my B. So my question is when I go for my driving test if I use a combination non air vehicle will I end up with an air restriction on the A? Again I have no restrictions on my B. Thanks in advance.

What A combo does not have air brakes?
Are you talking Hot Shot setup for testing?

First I would say ask your local DMV/test center for the answer.
My guess and it is MY guess is because you have air already it will stay and be carried over to the A license.
Then again the air brake test part is different for class A then it is for class B and you have air lines to the trailer that have to be hooked up/tested for class A so who knows??

I had a B license with air so when I took my A written test like you I did not need to take the air so I took tanker and Doubles & Triples.
Tanker was added to my B license and the D&T was put on hold till I took & passed my A license skill/road test part.
When I went to get my hard copy of A license I took HAZMAT so it was added to my A license with tanker from the B license and D&T that was on hold.
Thing is I took the skill/road test on a normal 18 wheel rig with air brakes so.....

I am from NH an need to get my A to drive for a friend of mine. His rigs are only able to run in MA. He has a Dodge 4500 (18K gvw) and a gooseneck (22K gvw) so that technically is a combination vehicle an can be driven out of state. So if that would suffice I can use that for the driving portion. An I do know the A's have trailer brake check an so forth, but I am trying to get a definite as to if my air would follow. If it didn't an I had a restriction it seems it would be across the board an essentially I'd loss the air all together...

That is a class 4 truck. I thought that testing should be in at least a class 7. Which is the first class to require a B CDL.

I looked at the MA DMV site. In order to get an Air brakes endorsement a written test and road test are required. This means you will need a truck with air brakes to take the test if you want the airbrakes on your A. I know that you have it for your B. But it is a different animal for the A. Mostly in the pretrip section.

Check with your dmv. There all differant, when i took mine i didnt need to test for air brakes (had it on my b) but i needed to pass the air brake pre trip (part of standered combo pre trip here) and i passed my A in a automatic. That was some 17 years ago tho, i think i would have a few restrictions if i did it the same way today
