after being unemployed since sept./2011, i decided to go back otr with swift trans..i did my 3 day orientation last week in fontana and mentor called me monday saying we're leaving after xmas. swift wanted to send me solo rite away but i didn't feel comfortable with that due to being away from otr so long. so they are sending me with a mentor for 100 hrs. i don't have any experience driving in winter condition since i been in so. calif. most of my life lol. and alot has changed since i drove with them back in '97. i'm just glad to get back to work and off unemployment checks. i use my phone, so sorry if any spelling mistakes![]()

Good call on going with the mentor! It's always a breath of fresh air when one knows their own abilities well enough to know they need a refresher!

Welcome back. I too left Swift in 1997 and just came back this past September. I am currently doing the 240hr mentor course. 100hr would have been nice but I got a fantastic mentor so 240 is OK with me.
I did some east coast winter driving back in 1996 but all that knowledge is long gone. So far this go round I have driven I-70 during the blizzard of Dec 17th and that wasn't too bad. When I had my fill of white out conditions we swapped drivers and he got us to Utah 25mph at a time. We'll be together until the end of January so I'm sure I will see more white stuff before too long.dptrucker Thanks this. -

got in mentor truck last nite. spent nite in fontana due to both of being up all day. headed out to pheonix at 5 this morning. now at the pheonix terminal waiting for a load. he tcall the other load since it delivers on the 31st

we picked a load, after waiting to get an mt trailer, at casa grande,az and took it too bakersfeild,ca. today. since there was no load yet and mentor didn't want to wait, he dropped me off at fontana terminal and got me a hotel room so he can go home for the weekend. not sure if he's l/o or an o/o but says lease to swift on tractor. he has a prostar which is an 8 speed and i kept driving it like a 10 since i been used to that. only been back two days now and still grinding abit shifting. think he"s getting a little bit irritated but i told him it"ll take some practice before i get back into it. and is harping on fuel milage. i can understand his point since he's paying for his fuel..but we got a little over 8 mpg going from indio,ca to bakersfeild,ca and going over the grapevine. and it was about 42000 lbs load
