    Am looking at making a career change to OTR trucking. Have my CDLA w/ tanker endorsement complete. Upon applying for a job at Midwest Coast in Sioux Falls, SD; I was offered a job after filling out an application and on my way home.

    I had informed the recruiter that I did have some criminal history that had taken place over 20 years ago and he stated that should not be a problem.

    The day I was to quit my current job of 14 years; he calls me up and says that the background check had far to much on it for me to become a new hire.....bummer.

    My concern is this then.....I do have a couple of felonies on my record as well as some misdameanors. As stated; these all go back over twenty years ago and are all what they consider property crimes; no drug/alcohol or sexual cases.

    What are my chances of getting a job with any decent company? Most advertise that felony criminal history activity must be at least 7-10 years old with nothing new/current.

    With my background being over wenty years old.....is there any company willing to look at my rock solid work history and give me a chance?

    If so please advise with whom you would suggest.

    Thanks to all in advance.

    Just wanted to add a few items;

    All my rights have been restored at a federal level. I am going to get my passport and also a TWIC card which should give any perspective employer some piece of mind that I have completed any/all requirements needed to clear borders and receive the security clearance to ports.

    Was honest with Midwest Coast upon applying and will continue to be with any other company that will be willing to take a good look at me as a new hire.

    Backgrouond check for Midwest Coast was completed by HireRight; and yes my record did come up with the history I am speaking of.....

    A quick search on this forum will show MANY of these type of posts and all of the negative answers provided....
    Ironically, since this question comes up so often, it should be a sticky or in some FAQ...

    ..With all of the people out of work, you would likely loose out to another applicant w/o such issues and background...You might want to look into another line of work. Companies are and can be very fussy and picky.
    I wouldn't count on someone hiring you in trucking - at least not at the moment...

    But either way, best of luck to you in your job search....Some people dont care if you "paid the time for doing the crime"....

    While the companies do usually say 7-10 or even 20 years on criminal charges, they sometimes will say no more than 2 or 3 in a lifetime.

    It's not going to be impossible for you to find work, but it won't be easy. Look for smaller carriers or an O/O. Your possible bump in the road there could be your 0-1 year experience.
