One dead, three injured in I-495 crash

A woman believed to be in her 60s was killed and a 42-year-old woman and two children were injured this afternoon when a loader/backhoe fell off a trailer and landed on their van on Interstate 495 in Southborough, State Police said today.
The loader/backhoe -- a combination front-end loader and backhoe -- and the van traveled down an embankment 20 feet, coming to rest with the loader/backhoe on top, trapping the vans occupants. The incident was reported at 1:15 p.m., State Police said in a statement.
The woman killed was riding in a back seat of the Toyota Sienna van. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The 42-year-old woman who was driving was taken by helicopter to UMass Medical Center in Worcester. The two children were taken by ambulance to the same hospital.
The driver of the truck, Jeffrey Fisher, 49, of Coventry, R.I., who was towing the backhoe on a trailer with his 2010 Freightliner dump truck owned by National Grid, was not injured. The truck and trailer also ran off the road.
State Police spokesman David Procopio said investigators are hoping to interview the surviving victims and experts will examine the truck and reconstruct the crash.
One area to be scrutinized will be how the piece of heavy construction equipment was secured to the trailer, he said.
Procopio said State Police were not ruling out potential criminal charges, depending on what the investigation determines.
Procopio said the left lane was open on the road at about 5 p.m., but it would be a while before the road was fully reopened.

A witness on chanel 5 in Boston said he weaved and lost control, the backhoe came off the trailer and the went airborne onto the van. Sad for him and the families involved. My prayers go out ot all.

Yup this one was a mess. Traffic was ridiculous. So glad i wasnt in that area at the time but a buddy of mine was. He said people were out just walking around and hanging out.
