He was actually another company driver. We both reported it. To our companies. I know this is a newbie thread but I still consider myself a newbie after 2 1/2 years of driving. This is my first ever time hitting anything and no tickets whatsoever.

If its your only mistake recently then it will likely be fine. That said. Thats not a small scratch thats entirely new mirror. And those mirrors can run quite a lot of money. When a moron ripped mine off a couple months ago it was almost $900 just for the mirror assembly and a good $300 more for putting it on and removing the bend from the door.

I can understand a new mirror from your experience but this did nothing but a cosmetic issue. Not sure why a whole replacement would be needed but I suppose that’s not my call either way. Like I said before this is my first time ever hitting anything in my whole 2 1/2 years of driving.

And just for reference I drive a conestoga and the thing that scratched the mirror was my tarp strap. The hook caught his mirror.

Most of these mirrors are glued together plastic. You cant USUALLY fix that type of damage to a mirror, ergo defacto replacment is required. And from what i can see in the image the mirror is gouged down into the second layer so non repairable. You can also tell the hit has warped the plastic so it no longer lines up correctly indicateing the internal structure was crushed or damaged which may have damaged the plastic mount as well. Cant tell without getting it off the truck and inspecting the plastic plate to see if the screws have pulled through or not.

Just because its "cosmetic" and still works does not mean that the mirror is not still destroyed. If you cant fix it, then it requires replacment. For a company driver like yourself and a large mega as well as an internal matter they likely will just write it off and leave it on the rig. For an O/O well id be demanding they replace it since i refuse to just swallow $900+ in damage.

Regardless though as i said your likely to get written up and/or yelled at. But its not the end of the world either

Its quite amazing when you offer to pay for the damages just how accommodating a company can be. Will definitely help to get in their good books.

2 1/2 years and you backed into a mirror in a tight parking spot. I highly doubt it’ll be the end of your truck driving career or probably even the job you’re at. That said, the truck don’t move if you’re not 100% sure. And as I’ve said here before in situations like this, I guarantee you if you think back, you had that moment in your mind where you were thinking, “I wonder if I’m going to clear that”. That was the moment when you should’ve pulled the brake and went back there and looked.

about a year ago, I had a guy helping me back into a very tight spot. Friendly driver. Jumped out of his truck as the overhead was extremely tight and he was guiding me back. Something still just seemed off to me. He wasn’t really watching the blind side of the trailer. He was motioning me to continue back, but it didn’t look right to me so I popped the brake and ran back there myself. Sure enough, my trailer swing would’ve clipped the trucks mirror next to me. And even though I had a spotter, it still would’ve happened. I have respect for any driver, no matter how much experience that is still willing to get out and look when they’re not sure.
