I'm a 29 year old who only recently found out that he needs to get his life in order. Trucking has been something I've wanted to do for years, many family members are truckers, and currently at this age, the only qualifications I have involve flipping burgers and counting change, so trucking sounded like the opportunity to make something of myself.

So I set out to apply to CDL schools, the grants aren't an option for me currently, so I called CR England after applying and was happy to discover I was accepted (who isn't though lol) and started the process.

Last week I obtained my medical certificate which doesn't expire until 2024, (paid for by CR England) and am on track to obtain my CDL permit this upcoming Thursday. I don't remember signing any contract, but they paid over $100 for that DOT physical.

I then started reading online that a federally legal substance called "Delta-8" would result in a positive drug screening for THC since they share almost indentical molecular structures. Sadly for me, I was ingesting this stuff almost daily for a year until June this year, when I started getting serious about my life. Out of curiosity, I had my hair and urine tested at a lab privately, and of course, they were both positive for marijuana. (Yes I know marijuana stays for 30 days in your system, but delta 8 is MUCH more stable and apparently hasn't left me yet)

    Now I have two options.
    1) Leave to Utah next week and fail my drug test, making me nearly unable to drive semi for quite some time and likely forever tarnishing my employment eligibility

    2) Be honest about my situation with my recruiter and hold off on attending school until I can pass both drugs tests.

Of course I can't pick option 1, that's ridiculous, but my concern is if option 2 is just as bad at this point. I've been given a student ID number, but have not shown up to school yet or signed a contract, but they've paid for my medical certificate. If I pull out now, would this put me in a bad situation as far as employment in the trucking industry?

Just tell them you are unable to attend their school and decided on a different career.

Don’t just show up to fail a drug test, that would be idiotic.

I definitely wouldnt tell a trucking company I cant pass a drug test. I don't believe you will have any negative effects. But its definitely less effect than dropping a dirty UA.

At this point your only real option is to call and say things have changed and you can't attend class.

I do not know about all of that but sometimes honesty is the best policy. Take a couple of months for personal reasons and begin again.

    Don't go, Don't ruin it.
I was in orientation about 18 months ago for a new job, I was the only guy there.
They told me you'd be surprised how many Grandmas die on Mondays, lol

Thanks for the reply, I know it'd be pretty idiotic, I'm just worried about what consequences I'd face moving forward after having bailed on a company after them paying for my certificate.

I'd tell England a family emergency came up & have to postpone the start date for training, but still have all intentions of following though with them. Maybe offer to foot the $100 bill for the Med card right now till you resume the onboarding process. Maybe they can reimburse you when you show up for training.. I'd see where that got me before admitting to the company I can't pass their wiz quiz..

When you can pass the screening set up a new start date..

Thank you, I'll take this advice, just really worried if I'd be un-hireable after wasting their time like this.
