I just started flat bed about 4 weeks ago, I got everything down, except, backing.Im ok, but if i have to back into a steel plant to pick up coils, i have trouble, why are those split axles so touchy?

Its because the rear axle becomes the pivit when backing. Whereas the front axle is the pivit when goin forward. So you have to make your move a little later then you would on a regular tandem trailer. Its just one of those things that you will have to pick up. I suggest if you have a yard to practice in just give it a few back-ups and you will have it.

If you have a dump valve, use it. That way, you are basically backing on one of the two axles, makes it easier.

as long as you dont have to "jack it" hard and slide an axle across the ground(flat spotting tires) backing a spread is SOOOO easy. the pivot point NEVER changes backing up. I love backing my 48' spread

I see your memory is about as good as your driving skills...:biggrin_2559: The last newbie was locking down his load. I helped him with his terminology as well. He was also using that crow bar thingy....called a winch bar...:biggrin_2559:

Careful with the dump valve, though.. maneuvering that thing with the dump valve engaged can make it even more touchy, because now you're pivoting on your front axle backing up, and the remaining eight feet is swinging about.

    AZS Thanks this.
