I see drivers doing this all the time. One thing I see a lot of drivers doing. The drivers are pulling into a spot instead of backing in. An example, when a driver takes a break.

I do it all the time. Got into the habit when I had a Classic XL with body mounted mirrors.

Back in the early 70's when I first went OTR it was common and just about necessary. I was never wild about it after I saw a driver somehow slip and fall under his steer tire. He was lucky he only ran over one leg. I taught myself how to back a side stack truck without opening the door which involved knowing to within inches where every tire was. I'm still uncomfortable when I see a driver doing it now and I've seen too many doing it unnecessarily just to be cool where anything one does with these truck's 'just to be cool' proves they're an idiot.

In a 379 or similar narrow cab truck I open the door just enough to get the perspective I need in the mirror. It's an old school moto-mirror. I've never liked the idea of getting one leg outside the door & looking back. You should be able to back it using the mirrors.

After a year in my Cascadia I've probably lost the touch.

I saw a guy slip off the running board and then desperately try to climb back into the truck before he backed into a trailer. Never saw him again after that day. But he gave a few of us a great laugh.

I think only really fat obese people who cannot summon the strength to lean out of the window have to open the door. I tried it once just to see what impact it would have on my backing ability and I can see just the same as if I roll down the window.

I confess to doing this. Reason: better chance of NOT having a wide open reefer motor running right next to my ear! If it's hot, or cold, enough to idle, I'll back in.
