Backing

Most schools are patient about the students training. If they are not then you need to look at a different school.

 

When I was learning to back up trailers, I drove myself nuts thinking "left is right, right is left" etc. It's much easier to turn towards the trouble. Example: You're backing up and the trailer tail is going too much towards the left/driver's side. With your hand at 12 o'clock on the wheel, turn the wheel counter clockwise to get it back in line. You can also look around your area for jobs as a yard dog/jockey/switcher/hostler. All we do is back up trailers and pull them off doors.

 

Get two butterknives and a spoon. Put the butterknives on the table positioned like a parking spot. Lay the spoon on the table. Put your finger on the handle porting of the spoon (your trailer) and practice backing.

Have fun and remember you probably look like an idiot when doing it so dont do it in public

 

Patience is a virtue.

If Backing is the problem you will have the time to learn. With a audience trying to help or tease you. (Mostly help)

If a school does not show patience then they are not a school.

With that said my school was really rough. They stand on the fuel tank and say turn this dam wheel this way look at that trailer and unwind that wheel and follow it in. If done right it's in one move and you are reasonable straight.

It took alot of time to get it down in one move. But once you have it for a particular truck you don't forget. Even today I can probably get it in there in one. Maybe two if I am so rusty. But you never forget.

My one problem in school was big savage mountain west of Cumberland. The instructors solved that right quick. In fact, they made a monster out of me.

 

I've heard that JP/WT does very good training but are selective in who they hire. Ask for Alex in Montana as she is very kind and will answer anything you need about their program.

 

I went to Commercial Drivers School. There an excellant school. The instructors train until you aquire your cdl. They have like a 99 or 98% graduation rate.
