I have driven for both large and small. I have seen the best of both AND I have seen the worst. One problem with small "family-owned" carriers is dealing with all the fussing and fighting especially between brothers who are sons of the owner.

There is NO such thing as a perfect carrier. If I were still an active driver I would tend to lean toward working for a small carrier IF the chemistry is right. Otherwise, I rather drive a pumpkin or have Arizona IFTA stickers.

I don't like that "personal touch" at all. Don't want to have a beer with the boss and don't want to have lunch with him or her. Many of us are this way; work hard for the company and the customer, don't steal, take care of the equipment. As far as the "buddy, buddy" stuff; save that for drivers that need it.

Not to go off topic but the movie is called Office Space, not the office, which is a tv show.

My old work sucked me in.

After staying out continuously and working every weekend all winter, came spring I told them in April come summer I'm not working anymore weekends just for the summer.

Their response is everybody has to work at least 2 weekends a month. My response ,If I have to this is my 8 week notice.

I than reminded them weekly. Come June 15 they scheduled me for the weekend.

And that was my last day.

While not trucking I have worked at small companies in the past. First one his daughter was stealing cash from the register (gas station back in my teens) and I got fired and threatened with charges if I filed for unemployment Second one was ok, but between getting conscripted as a day laborer to help build his house to knowing he was days away from getting evicted from his retail space and thus me not having a job the stress was just too high to deal with.

On the other hand, any large company I've worked for, from Microsoft.to Swift, as long as one knows the metrics and can deal with the bureaucracy one at least knows what to expect.

Now I'm glad you found a place you like, but small companies are just not for me any longer.

All I can say is make sure you document and record all conversations, text messages etc. for YOUR protection and do not delete or destroy them for the next million years just in case they try the old abandoned equipment ,quit under a load. Also take detailed pictures of your truck and trailer as well as copies of you last BOL. Practice CYA everyday.

Tell them you have a personal emergency need to go home right now, personal is as far as the explanation needs to go, after you get home in a day or 2 tell them you need to take a personal leave of absence, don't tell them anything else till you have all your money. Then simply tell them that unfortunately you won't be back.

That's how I view every job. I'm here just for the money, got plenty of family already and don't need any friends.

Some companies/drivers make a big deal of "not being just a truck number", personally I would rather that than anyone know me by name.

Stay well under the radar and get the job done. My pay correct and on time is all the thanks I need.
