Believe it or else, before I moved to the town where I now live, the city police actually went on strike.

They wanted higher pay and more benefits, even though they knew what those things were BEFORE they agreed to
Serve & Protect.
And it was splashed ALL over the news.
LOCAL CITY POLICE ON STRIKE.

I have a real problem with public safety workers going on strike. I don't like it, I don't think it is right. It is a violation of the oath of office that they take when they are hired.

Now, that being said. . .

When you are working for the same wage you were working for five or six years ago, despite the increases in the cost of living - - -
When you see the politicos within the government giving themselves raises- - -
When you see the unnecessary programs added, so that someones brother-in-law has a plum, but not needed job- - -
When you see your city council, or county board of stupidvisors er supervisors taking "fact finding trips" that are nothing more than expenses paid vacations- - -
And then these same a-holes say they don't have any money to increase police or fire wages- - -

Actually, this is the type of feeling that you see way too often. However, there are a LOT of departments that use non-sworn personnel for certain duties.

Bet real, Big D. But would civilians be likely to subscribe to the brotherhood of police? I mean, could civilians be trusted not to blow the police whistle when they discover misconduct within the ranks of sworn officers?
Civilians might actually believe in honor and respect for the law.
They'd be labeled "misfits" and/or "malcontents" --- trouble makers, and be subject to the wrath of the sworn, anointed officers, who have a badge to hide behind. Hmmmmmmmm

Well Shockey, I'd say you are painting with an awfully broad brush here. Believe it or not there are some, in fact a LOT of coppers who do believe in honor. But unfortunately, there are also the ones who don't. And they give everyone else in the job a black eye.

Would those trained civilians be paid the same, or less, than their sworn counterparts?

The short answer is: They are paid less. MUCH less. And for good reason.
The true answer is a little bit tougher. It depends on what their job is. If they are file clerks, or dispatchers, or receptionists, they are paid a whole lot less.

These are not the line folks who have to deal with the scum on a day to day basis. They are not expected to be out there putting their lives on the line. They don't wind up being involved in (gun)fire fights, or physical fights where they are actually fighting for their lives.

They don't have to go through the months of training that is mandated now in every state, plus more weeks of on the job training, under the extremely demanding eyes of a training officer. They don't have to go through the constant refresher courses and updated training on laws that are constantly changing.

Now, to move on to civilian corrections officers, or the plain old "screw." These are folks who are not trained to the same level as their copper counter-parts are. These folks have limited peace officer powers, and then only when they are on duty, or within certain confines.

These are the guys who work every day in the jails and prisons. They are in a "community" of sorts, and they have to enforce the laws in there. But in their community, they are doing this unarmed, and in a constantly hostile environment. It is a job that sucks, big time. I spent three years working custody, and hated every minute of it.

Many departments use this position as an entry level for guys who will go on to full law enforcement. It would be fine, if it worked well, but I've known deputies with LA County Sheriff who have been sworn officers for over ten years, and never worked the street. They have been caught in the jail system and there they are.

This is where I say there is a tremendous waste of resources. Sure, you need some sworn personnel there to supervise the operation. But you don't need to have all the guards be sworn officers.

And we all know which way that "waste" runs, right?
For those who don't --- it's DOWN hill. Usually without a Jake, and the brakes are smokin'.

Of course, he claims he's innocent.
Butt, I'm thinkin' the final decision will be made by the inmates his office made guests of the State.
And I'm sure they'll make it clear who the Top Dawg is on their side of the law.

I'm not familiar with this particular individual. But I certainly know of all kinds of problems from misconduct up to criminal action in some top administrations. Again, it is the bad ones that give everyone a big black eye.

Good lord how I have gone on here. I didn't mean to make this a rant.
