When I read HotH20's post, I thought the same thing as you. After thinking about it for a little while another thought came to my head, that told me I was wrong. HotH20 is wrong in the statement; " A man can't be taught discipline!". Anyone can be taught discipline but, they must CHOOSE to use it... I LEARNED discipline at a young age but chose not to use my teachings. My time in the service showed me that discipline was important and I now use it more than ever. Boot camp showed me that I could do more than I thought,,,,my 8 years with my unit and two tours showed me why it was important but, I still had to CHOOSE to use it... I still struggle with Discipline but, not with as many challenges as 10 years ago... Small things now, like not eating too many calories... Chocolate is the worst for me... Quitting smoking was easy compared to chocolate...lol

Those ex-military who remain so... I tend to think that's more of a matter of their own inclinations. I've been in the military, I've kept in touch with others I served with, and I've seen them go either direction after their ETS date. I don't really think military time teaches self discipline.. it's more discipline through coercion.... knowing that if you #### up, an entire squad, platoon, company, etc. could end up punished for it, and I think that's the more common disciplinary motivator than actual self-discipline, which is why I agree with the statement of, "either you have it or you don't".

    That. Right there.

Some are in ways, yet in other ways they are not.

I've seen several military & ex-military men who will spend all their money, & before the next payday be broke, & that's their way of life.

And yes, if you teach your children, likely they will be disciplined, yet today many are not teaching their children to be disciplined!

Chocolate is a food group in and of itself, and MUST be a part of ANY dietary regimen. Oh, and coffee. Can't forget coffee. ;-)

Had a blast reading through this thread and what really strikes me are comments like this.

What on earth has that to do with what kind of gearbox you have???? Not a single ####### ####. If you don't know how to use it you will get stuck. But never ever blame the gearbox for that problem.

The I-shift is the only real auto gearbox developed from scratch as an automatic for much heavier weights than whats run in the states. Started of as a side project by a couple of guys that didn't like that there weren't any real good auto box out there. There isn't any single possibility to change the I-shift box to a manual. And even if you would succeed the gears are not lined up as an H pattern since it's built to shift as fast as possible. But like every box it you need to now how to use it to get the most out of it, the pedal to the metal method is not that.
It has a gyro sensor so it senses the gradient of the road. It reads the weight and how to change after that + it learns your driving style. Newest versions also uses gps mapping. But to get it perfect you will need to select over to manual mode sometimes, it's not there to so you get some more symbols on the dash, no it's meant to be used.
Even the best economy driver out there will never ever beat the ishift. It's so good and it's faster! than you will ever shift a manual box

The culture is a bit different here since I'm not hearing the status about driving a manual here. Maybe it's because even the most hardcore truckers has realized that the auto boxes are so good today and the manual sales has dropped to nothing. And hey this week for ex. 6.7mpg with load weight the same as you guys gross, 80 000pounds with a 700hp auto truck speak for it self. I can honestly say the consumption would be worse with a manual.

HA Actually no thank you very much. It is actually by a driver who is a very close friend of mine from the Marine corp. He drives a Volvo pulling a water trailer around up there. It has a 16K FA but his words are everything has worn out and been replaced at least once on the front axle. As for the I-Shift, he said good luck on the roads up there with the snow/ice/dirt/mud. His company was sent the trucks by Volvo to see how they would handle pretty much being a bush truck. His opinion is they failed miserably.
