While I don't disagree with you in principle, I also think it's important for new drivers to hear from others that this industry is always going to be testing boundaries.

How about for free? I said yes to free tarping for 2 years and then got I a better job because I had a stellar resume. When you are brand new, it's a #####. But you start somewhere

We only get $50 as well... not a huge deal. Some guys think tarping is harder than crossing mt everest.. if you can tarp in in an hour or less, which the vast majority of experienced tarpers can do. you just made $50 an hour... sure on the harder to tarp loads that take longer it is what it is.. but i always thought tarping was part of flatbed work... maybe pull a reefer and go sit at a dock for 20 hours unpaid.. I know which one I'm choosing

I have an old spiritual mentor that use to say, “People would come to me and ask me, ‘what does honesty mean’ as they were becoming spiritual and trying to grasp this concept and live a new type of life. I would say to them, ‘Well, honesty means honest…’”

It took me years to figure out what that meant…until I became honest.

I think this gets underrated, because it does seem like a good place to work from what I have seen and experienced in the trucking world. I think I need to remind myself of this more. Guy seems to be a good guy for the most part, and I know the freight market is tough right now, so maybe I just need to be thankful for the opportunity if I want to keep doing this. The fact that I am not micromanaged at all, and have nobody breathing down my back, and he trusts me, goes a long way with me.

I don’t get pay for dead head either, also no pay for tarp, however I get winter driving bonus 5 cents per mile and quarterly bonus for hitting certain mileage, which is usually $800-1100, also $100 per extra stop. I do get a good amount of miles weekly tho. everything comes with experience, always keep looking for better options and talk to different people about opportunities. At the end of the day, money talks BS walks

I’m just finishing up my fourth week in this position and I just realized that I did 1770 miles dead heading in those four weeks. With the pay that he does give me an average of $.31 a mile for dead head miles. it seems like a lot of deadhead miles and just less than a month time in my opinion, but I just don’t know. I am in the process of dead heading 460 miles right now. It seems like I’ll be doing at least than once a week but probably averaging about 600 dead head miles per week when I am doing it.

When they don't have to pay up for deadhead it means they'll look further out for loads since they can get you to move the truck for cheap/free. It used to be pretty common back in the day. I heard about how my company used to do low pay for deadhead in the 80s. Also keep in mind they're probably using PCMiler/zip to zip miles, not miles driven so if the numbers don't make sense that'll be why. Pretty much everybody does that.
