Ok to start w/ I'm not a trucker my husband is. I'm doing this for my husband. He has been w/ his mentor, who's an O/O through Swift, 6 weeks will be done tomorrow. His mentor is a total jerk. And should NOT be a mentor. He has been putting my husband down personally, yells # him constantly, yells # him for going to the bathroom, has threatened him, having my husband driving # night while the mentor sleeps, on the phone a lot, and much much more. The DM will not do anything about this jerks attitude. Seems like both DM and the mentor is out to get my husband. Now since my husband stood his ground today he is worse, giving him hints to leave his truck. Now my husband thinks he is going to get fired. All he is in it for is the money since my husband has done most of the driving. Anyone else have or had problems with their mentors from Swift? Any advise for my husband.

Try to stay until his training is up. It's not forever. I know, I know, it can be un-bearable to be on a truck with an idiot, but, once he's done with training, he's on his own in his own truck.
alds Thanks this. -
Tell hubby to sweat it out for another day or so and just look forward to the day he will be off the truck. My Swift mentor: used my phone to call overseas without my permission, played with his computer when he was supposed to be sleeping, so I did most of the driving, had a series of personal problems crop up while I was on his truck...which made it a living he**, had to be asked to change his shirt after six days....and it goes on and on...
Best thing hubby can do is just keep a low profile for a couple more days and be happy when he gets his own truck. Swift knows we all get cabin fever after being locked up in a space the size of your average bathroom 24/7 for six weeks with a complete stranger. It's not that they don't care. It's that they know it's almost over. I hated my mentor when I got off his truck...but we became friends later. He's not such a bad guy...(my mentor) but we had a h*** of a roller-coaster ride.telcobilly Thanks this. -
my first trainer was really bad but really he prepared me for the real world.Truckers get exposed to alot of nastiness. He will do alot of night driving and if he wants to stay in trucking he will endure alot of stuff his first year. After the first year things get alot easier

As your husband was told during training and orientation and by Driver Services, he does NOT have to put up with that type of treatment. Driver Services checks with those being mentored and your husband could have told them about the problems.
He needs to contact the Driver Service rep he's been given or anyone in Driver Services and TELL THEM. They will at least know the problems so if the mentor tries to low ball him he has proof.
Had he told them sooner they would simply have given him another mentor.
As for him driving at night. Normally during the six week training period the first to second week is done with the mentor in the passenger seat. But once the mentor feels the student is capable the driving is split and YES the student will be put on nights when the mentor feels it's okay.
If a student doesn't drive nights until he's given his own truck........then he/she is going to have a MAJOR problem.
I began driving nights the end of my second week of mentoring and my mentor was my own husband who wanted to baby me.
Anyway........he needs to contact Driver Services.
Best of luck to your husband and tell him "welcome to the team" for me. *smiles*Injun Thanks this. -
As a matter of fact, I'm in the process of returning to Swift. I have already contacted my previous DM, who wants me back on his board, which is where I want to be. He and I got some stuff done while I was there. Everything is in place and there are only two more steps to take. When they are completed, bye-bye current company. I didn't have to scrape by so much when I ran for Swift. These guys are killing me with all the nickel-and-dime crap. I can pull a revenue week of $5800 and take home $450. Something wrong with that picture.
For those who say they won't hire people with previous experience, this kind of puts the lie to it. I know...there are a lot of people who still think I'm a "rookie" and that's fine. Think what you will. There are folks out here driving with six months experience with more tickets, more accidents and more service failures than I have....which is....zero on all counts. And I personally have seen them hire people with fifteen, twenty or more years of experience. -
welcome back Injun!
What I've been told is they'll do rehires only on people that had a good rep with Swift and if the fleet manager or DM wants them. Obviously......they like you.
They'll also hire experienced but what I'm still being told is they'll start at the reg pay and they'll have to at least go through orientation and possibly swift school. They will also have to do the 6 weeks of mentoring.
I'm told that Swift rehires don't have to repeat the mentoring.
Of course.......I could be told wrong LOL -
It is not uncommon for a trainer and a student to not get along. The companies realize this. Ask hire up than your dm for a different trainer.

Thank u everyone. But for one thing to Texas-Nana He has told the situation to his DM and did mention changing mentors. The DM talked to the mentor about the situation. The mentor talked to my husband about it and seemed ok after their talk. This was 2 or 3 weeks with this mentor seemed ok for few days after their talk. Then it got worse for him. He has driven night for this mentor pretty much since the beginning there was no wait for a week or two. Actually there were very few times he drove during the day. He is ok driving # night. but the problem is his mentor is not teaching him properly. And it doesn't help when ur getting yelled # constantly.

Oh my husband was a truck driver 5 years ago with Schneider in Cali. But they still consider him a newby.
