In IL, if you own or finance/lease a truck you can get your own plates, but you have to have a "Safety Carrier" on record. If you change carriers, you are suppose to fill out the change of carrier info and tell the state. I'm going through that right now.

In Mi the renewal states if leased must include copy of lease agreement. What matters is wether they overcharge you for the cost of plate or not . If not and you part ways be prepared to buy own or use next Companies. Good argument against buying own plate is next Company’s Lease agreement pays all plate fees.Your paid plate being a waste of your money. My first of 2 leases Ive signed paid for all plates Ifta and even a $250 week workman’s comp. Low start up cost for Me. Bought Truck 0 dn. Had nearly 0 in Bank. According to most I had not a chance in the World!! 22 yrs later still doing everything the “ wrong way” while some others were short lived.Theres always an ideal way then there’s the real ( reality ) way of making it happen.Let them buy plate focus on running Truck. Back then all I had to do is file trip report and keep up with Truck. Less hassle more Driving Time and more time for upkeep and hometime. Now it’s booking loads doing fuel taxes keeping records doing repairs and still running Truck.Total 12 things on list for next year to renew update or file 15 things if counting each Ifta filing. I’m not complaining cause I’m in charge. But the simplest way has its benefits as well.

    csmith1281 Thanks this.

Name a state we’re you can go in without having your authority and walk out with a baseplate. You can’t because to get a plate you have an IFTA account only an Authority can get a IFTA account.

I get a plate every year the last 40 some years without" my" own authority. Send in proof of lease, and insurance and miles. A owner doesn't need to prove IFTA at that time. A leased owner op can use company's. IFTA, or their own. But better have one or the other before hitting the road. My friend in Ohio does the same way. So to your ? Thats 2 states.

Not true, You don't have to have authority to get a plate. You do have to have a DOT number though. That is why you don't have to have MC# on the truck. You can use year lease company's DOT or you have to get one for yourself. If you haul your own product you do not need authority. I done it for years and I live in OH, I have a good friend that lives in PA that has done it for years and still does it. You can get insurance to without authority also. You just have to know how.

I have to ask about this, you guys can answer it if you want.

I walk into my IRP office in Lansing to get a new plate for my truck with a contract for that truck to a carrier. I do the paper work thing and they take the single summary sheet with the signatures on it copy it, put it into the file and I get my plate.

Five weeks later I take that truck out of the fleet of that company and then I go and put it on with another company. The time between the two companies is say three weeks. The truck is driven to the new company but during that trip, I am taking a vacation and drive out to Vegas and then Dallas before I head to Rockford.

NOW my question - do you think that the IRP people actually check on that first contract AND do you think they care if I transferred the truck to a second carrier?

I know the answer to this by the way, I am looking for opinions of what they think happens.

I've never been to an IFTA office, didn't know there was one.

I have had Authority’s in 3 States. WI, CO, IN. If you have just a DOT number you don’t get an IFTA because your restricted to that state only. I can say this IFTA does keep track of everything. I would not allow anybody to lease on under my Authority unless they use my insurance company and I provide the plate. If they left I would prorate the amount back to them. Why would any lease operators want you to have your own insurance??? What if the limits are not the same? What if you have an accident and you don’t have bobtail insurance? I’m certainly not paying for your cargo insurance. Doesn’t seem like that would be a good way to protect yourself and equipment. Good conversation.

Never been to an IFTA either. But as far as who knows who im leased to as in switching companies between plate renewal? I just show or send copy of recent lease. Although don't switch often. Been with my current 13 yrs in April.

Again not true. You do not need authority to have plate, IFTA , or insurance. That is just a fact. I have done it for years. And I know people still doing it today. Your company your rules but it is not needed. I would not lease to you if you insisted on me running your plate. I would let you file my IFTA though. LOL
I'm not going to argue with though.
