In IL, if you own or finance/lease a truck you can get your own plates, but you have to have a "Safety Carrier" on record. If you change carriers, you are suppose to fill out the change of carrier info and tell the state. I'm going through that right now.
Baseplate transferable to different authority?

In Mi the renewal states if leased must include copy of lease agreement. What matters is wether they overcharge you for the cost of plate or not . If not and you part ways be prepared to buy own or use next Companies. Good argument against buying own plate is next Company’s Lease agreement pays all plate fees.Your paid plate being a waste of your money. My first of 2 leases Ive signed paid for all plates Ifta and even a $250 week workman’s comp. Low start up cost for Me. Bought Truck 0 dn. Had nearly 0 in Bank. According to most I had not a chance in the World!! 22 yrs later still doing everything the “ wrong way” while some others were short lived.Theres always an ideal way then there’s the real ( reality ) way of making it happen.Let them buy plate focus on running Truck. Back then all I had to do is file trip report and keep up with Truck. Less hassle more Driving Time and more time for upkeep and hometime. Now it’s booking loads doing fuel taxes keeping records doing repairs and still running Truck.Total 12 things on list for next year to renew update or file 15 things if counting each Ifta filing. I’m not complaining cause I’m in charge. But the simplest way has its benefits as well.

Not true, You don't have to have authority to get a plate. You do have to have a DOT number though. That is why you don't have to have MC# on the truck. You can use year lease company's DOT or you have to get one for yourself. If you haul your own product you do not need authority. I done it for years and I live in OH, I have a good friend that lives in PA that has done it for years and still does it. You can get insurance to without authority also. You just have to know how. -
I have to ask about this, you guys can answer it if you want.
I walk into my IRP office in Lansing to get a new plate for my truck with a contract for that truck to a carrier. I do the paper work thing and they take the single summary sheet with the signatures on it copy it, put it into the file and I get my plate.
Five weeks later I take that truck out of the fleet of that company and then I go and put it on with another company. The time between the two companies is say three weeks. The truck is driven to the new company but during that trip, I am taking a vacation and drive out to Vegas and then Dallas before I head to Rockford.
NOW my question - do you think that the IRP people actually check on that first contract AND do you think they care if I transferred the truck to a second carrier?
I know the answer to this by the way, I am looking for opinions of what they think happens.Last edited: Nov 18, 2018

I've never been to an IFTA office, didn't know there was one.
