What are the cold cranking amp requirements for a 3406E Cat? I have a 3 battery system in a 2000 KW and can't find anything anywhere about the battery size.

I had a 3406E in my 98 Frtliner with 3 batteries. I always had good service out of the Duralast from autozone.I think they were 750 cca.Hope this helps.If you get them from autozone tell them your putting them on a diesel pu.They waranty them 3 yrs I think. Any autozone will warranty a bad battery.Handy if your on the road.

My friends running a gel battery and two regulars on his 99 Pete with a 3406E. Gell batteries last longer but not sure if they are worth the cost.

A C15 would be roughly the same, the guidelines for a 550 C15 are as follows;
Recommended mimimum CCA @temps above 0C is 1460
Recommended minimum CCA @temps above -18C is 1600
Recommended minimum CCA @temps below -18C is 1800
Cat guidelines assume 10W30 engine oil.grizzly Thanks this. -
Do marine batteries work better? Has anyone tried this?

3406E is a bigger bore engine. You will want 4 750 CCA batteries. The lower CCA will give you longer "reserve capacity". This is basically how long the battery can crank for. The batteries that have 950 or more CCA can't sustain good cranks for long, when compaired to quality name brand, new, 750 CCA battery. This all means nothing now, but in the dead of next winter, I would get the 4 750's.
P.S. don't buy them until October. Extreme winter cold AND summer heat kill batteries! -
Heavyd,
would you recommend gel, regular, or marine batteries?

Well I went with the autozone battery. Good battery, decent price, $89.99 plus tax. 3 year warranty.

To be totally honest, I have never seen anyone use anything but just regular commercial batteries. I work in a dealership environment and so I have seen literally hundreds of truck batteries and I have never seen anyone use a marine battery. One guy did use gel. As long as you buy all your batteries at the same time and have good clean connections, regular batteries will give you a great life span. Remember, once they go dead they never really fully come back, so make sure your truck doesn't have an excessive key-off electrical loads.
