I'm afraid that I have to say BCJ Trucking in Mt. Airy, NC. They were very honest with me when I was there and they're liberal with time at home. Yes, they have a few drawbacks, but, as with any company, the benefits have to be traded off with the drawbacks. Yet, above all, they were honest. Yes, they have a dispatcher who was a pain in the neck, yet the other 2 dispatchers were honest and made up for that. They slipseat when drivers take hometime, yet, if I had to stay home for that week, they didn't argue. I never had a problem with them when it came to safety issues. If, for instance, the weather conditions were bad, they'd just tell me to wait for it to get better and I could go through safely. There was even one time when *they* called me to let me know that road conditions were getting bad and that I had to shut down. They also had told me they hoped they caught me soon enough so I could find a safe place to park until road conditions got better. No recriminations and no "punishment" for it either. As long as I gave them an honest day's work, they gave me an honest day's pay. It was a relationship that I wish hadn't ended. I would still be with them today if things hadn't happened the way they had. But I can't say enough good about them, even now. And they've left a job offer open to me whenever I find another co-driver.

Well.....what happened?
-
My co-driver had a heart attack last August 2009 that put him out of driving for good. So, either I have to find another co-driver or try to find an O/O who is willing to put me to work. His heart attack was so bad that he's still having some symptoms even now.
-
So they only run teams, your co-driver has a heart attack and that puts you out of a job? Doesn't sound right to me or there's more to this story than you're telling.
Was your co-driver an O/O or company driver? -
Yes, they only run teams, and that's why I'm out for now. I've tried working for various companies without much success. And it is right according to their company policy because they don't put drivers with just anyone. They allow the driver to bring their co-driver. They know the importance of an effective team and they're not like any other company that runs teams. Hence the reason for me looking for another co-driver. BCJ won't put me with someone I don't know as that would make me ineffective as a driver. And there's no more to tell unless you *really* want to hear about my misadventure with JB Hunt? The company wants me to be with someone I trust so I can be effective. They don't care who it is as long as the driver is someone I can trust with my life as well as with company property. And I almost forgot, all their solo driver positions are full right now...another reason for me being out. And my co-driver was my husband, by the way.

Like I said, there was more to this story than you were telling and now I see the dilemma you're in.
I hope your husband makes a full recovery and you find the right partner to run with. Good luck. -
No problem, Mdbluecrab, and I understand. Unfortunately, my husband isn't going to recover. This last one did some damage, but at least now he's on disability...not much of a compensation considering that his first true love was driving, which we shared. And thank you for the wish of good luck. It's much appreciated. Perhaps you have some advice on finding another co-driver? I'm just following my instincts trying to find one. But, I still have to say that BCJ is still the best company for me, all things considered.
-
I wish you & your hubby all the best. I hope he'll have a speedy recovery. I will keep you both in my prayers. I can't offer any advice on selecting a new copilot, as I've never had to go this route, but I will pray that you figure it out.
Honestly, the thing that caught my eye was you posting about Mt. Airy, Nc. I've visited there several times. I've actually seen a couple/three postings on this board about good trucking companies in that area too, but the reason I was there (yrs ago) was the reunions/festivals of The Andy Griffith Show (TAGS).
I found it to be a GREAT town! The townspeople were so friendly & welcoming... The Mayor actually encouraged me to move there... can't get much more welcoming than that! LOL
I live in a pretty good small town myself, but I'll tell you... if they ever throw me out, I'll be headed toward Mt. Airy, NC.
Kind regards,
Ignatius -
Driving solo shouldn't be a problem. Driving team is like trying to find your "Soul Mate". It's a long tedious process with the odds stacked against you. You'll probably spend more time trying to match up with another driver than necessary.
I wish you all the luck in the world and hope you succeed in your endeavors.NC_38Special Thanks this. -
Mdbluecrab, well, I've tried other companies. No one can answer my tough questions. And yeppers, I do have an ad here under "Seek Employment". I just have to be patient and hope for the best. I wrote about my experience with one of those other companies in my blog. When the job starts changing me, it's time to make a change. That particular misadventure changed me into something worse than I wanted or my family needed. I can't abide with baldfaced lies and then the person who told them to deny ever telling them. But, that's for another thread.<lol> I've gotten my old sense of humor back and learned a valuable lesson. Recruiters are there only as window dressing and to show the fantasy side of companies. That may sound a bit jaded but then again, it's the truth. One recruiter told me that with my records the way they are, I can afford to be discerning...I believe "picky" was the word used. But, I have hope that I will find a "soul mate"...I'm not that hard to get along with when it comes to work. Just as long as my co-driver doesn't make a mess in the truck, has a sense of humor, and doesn't mind my sense of humor, we should be alright. Humor and a sense of direction are all that I ask. I ain't asking for perfection...there ain't none.<lol> I don't like lies, but then again, no one does...and humor will carry one through a lot of the garbage this world will throw atcha. Oh and let's not forget, I don't want the possible co-driver to wreck us. Waking up dead might be just a touch upsetting. But when it comes to getting down the road, that's what we were hired for, right? So, let's get down the road.<best southern drawl> So, I appreciate your well wishes and as long as the tough questions can be answered and we ain't gonna wreck somewhere, I ain't hard to get along with. Keep asking those tough questions. It helps to keep us all sharp and alert.
