Cat mechanic I trust told me on a C-15 acert. That unless you have bad oil sample or some problem don't roll the lower end bearings. Wait until your ready to do the whole motor . Old school me was thinking to do bearings at 400k to 500k or so. Trying to get to 1million for inframe. Whats up?

I know what your thinking but don't waste the money. I just overhauled mine at 940,000 mi and the bearings looked good enough to put back in for another million......and the last 450,000 mi has been at 800-900+ hp.

I spent a lot of years working on engines and am a firm believer in changing the mains, I worked in B.C. and we have lots of mountains. I believe in changing the bearings at 250,000 to 300,000 miles, then before the warrenty runs out. I have seen so many owners with a warrenty run out then bring it in and say well it was doing it for a long time I just didnt bring it in. Well they paid, the bearing roll in is cheap, and it alows things to be checked and if their is a problem it can be repaired, early before it gets worse and puts you down for a lot longer time.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with doing a bearing roll. If you want to because you feel it is needed then that is fine. IMHO it is a waste of time and money and a complete myth that it needs to be done every 400K or whatever. Some severe duty, heavy haul with extended service intervals may need them done earlier, but main bearings are good for the life of the engine. Replace them at inframe time. Oil sampling is a good indicator aswell. The bearing technology is leaps and bounds better than the bearings and engines of 20 years ago. We don't do too many bearing rolls anymore. Every time we do though, the customer is basically throwing $2000 in the garbage. Anyone recommending them is ripping people off!

dont really need to anymore it was the norm back in the b-model days but on an acert i wouldnt waist the $$ just do oil samples. had a e-model with over 1 mil when i tore it down and the bearings looked good as new. same for my converted a-cert.

years ago it was the normal thing for bearings at 300-400 thousand miles. it was even rare to go past 600,000 without an inframe .

today the filters and oil are much improved from years ago unless there is a problem , with proper maintenance the bearings should go until an overhaul is necessary

    oil samples tell the tale

I'll agree that bearing roll on emodel /c15 is not needed...but will say this.... of the ones I have torn down the rods look more worn than the mains....IPD used to have nice video about CAT bearings....I use their bearing with a groove....Now a c12 is one I'd still do like the older motors...my .02

Cheap insurance for no more than the bearings cost. Do it to CATs spec.

An interesting theory is that bearings are no longer suffering the chemical attack of fuel in the crankcase the way they did with mechanical motors. Electronic fuel control has made routine bearing role in obsolete.
