Will you get an Illinois license at swift? I do believe Illinois is one of those states if you transfer an out of state license you have to do the whole test again driving part included.

Get training. Without you will find it very difficult to get hired. In fact, I believe someone among these pages somewhere posted a link indicating the new rules taking effect next year or shortly thereafter requires all new CDL A drivers obtain accredited training in some form before they can drive commercially.

Bayles correct, Illinois will make you retest. IMHO i would get license on your own.

If you are having that much trouble deciding which to do, perhaps trucking would not be a good career choice for you. A trucker has to make many decisions every day.

Get it over with, go to Swift training, then when the debt is paid, move on if you wish.

I hate to agree with this, but if you think picking between a school to get your CDL or on your own is bad, wait until you're out here.

example: Do you take all interstate or back roads? are there any low clearances on those back roads? OMG you just came across a low clearance on a two lane road, now what do I do?

Calm, steady and a rested mind wins this race. Now with all that said I personally believe you should go to a training company, get your CDL, learn everything you can possibly learn from your trainer, put in your time at company and find that "dream" company that pays you what you should be worth by then.

    Just my opinion.

Probably should see if you can get your old job back.
