Hey there!! I was just wondering. There is so much information out there I don't even know where to start!! I have a couple major questions:

I have heard that long distance truckers can bring there significant other with them. Is this TRUE? What would that look like?
Is there a certain school you should go to, to become a long distance trucker?

A little background so you can better understand. My fiance has been in the mechanics industry his for a little over 12 years now hes tinkered here and there working on big rigs. I come from a family of truckers and recently my man has taken an interest into the lifestyle! My dad and grandfather were family men so they worked the usual construction trucking jobs keeping local and home every night for dinner (although almost always late). I work in the healthcare field and am working on getting an online business going so I can work more remotely. We love the outdoors and traveling and lately I am feeling the call of traveling the states and or doing "van life". That's where trucking comes in! Would it be possible for him to get his CDL and start driving for a company that does long hauls? Does he have to go to a certain school? Reach out to a job offer before schooling? Am I allowed to tag along purely for the ride in the cab. What does the schedule look like? What does long haul trucking look like? Literally any information you can give you think would be at all helpful please comment!!

Some companies have passenger waivers after a period of time. More difficult first year.

OTR is not what it was in the 70's

You will have to do shorts as well.

You have no schedule other than that dictated to you by dispatcher. (Appointment based)

Talk to your trucker family, they know way more than all of us can write here.

Sounds to me that if you get the answer you want, you will be telling your husband to get a driving job. lol
This question would get better answers in the questions for new truckers forum.
The short answer is yes, it is possible, but most peoples dreams of seeing the country are short lived in a company truck.

U will see the worst part of every major city and state there is to see as a truck driver. We dont get to go to the cool places and even if u do ,there is alot of snow and ice and very bad weather for the next couple months. For some reason people think this job is all about seeing the country and hitting the open road but those days are very few and far between. Its a tough job that humbles the best of us each and everyday . the lifestyle is tough and aint for everybody . u will #### in a public restroom each and everyday and eat nasty food ,. Sometimes its the only thing to keep from being hungary. I guess if u really wanna see the country it can be a good tool for that, but the first night u spend in houston or gary indiana, or west memphis, u will be wanting to go back home, but the freights gotta move and thats why they pay us the big bucks

Memphis. I consider south LA, South Chicago and certain parts of NYC and Boston to be dangerous to your life.

But Memphis... I take a deep breath and consider that I am going there with a million plus on my trailer of narcotics that any number of all those drug predators would kill me for. (One pint of Codine liquid brown bottle = 5000 dollars street value and there you have 4 pallets of the stuff, gallons of them tooling down US 79 which I call knife alley by the rail yard. Before you get that way you pass near Clementine housing which is all illegal long guns and so on.

    Memphis... what a town.

You will be sleeping there? Your first hooker will be standing on your fuel tank (If you are male or female it makes no difference to them...) you will find you need to keep the window up or their lice jump from the ungroomed eyebrows onto you. To transfer to your spouse.. then both of you have a problem.

    Memphis...

You sure about this trucking thing? HA. God help you.

How I solve the hooker problem?

Get a roll of shop towels, take two slices off it. Paper. Grab a condom out of it's box. pour baby oil into it throw that into the towel. Wet it in the center. Ball it and stick it on your fuel tank step deck with some of the condom sticking out.

Any hooker with eyes will instantly leave you alone because you already been serviced. They think.

I guess maybe with the e-logs, things may be different, but in my years of otr, I never had to spend thenight in Gary, or west memphis. I ran my own numbers and had quite a bit more freedom than a lot of truckers in that regard.
I also had more freedom to take the roads I wanted and see much better scenery at times when I was not under the gun on a run, but that is not an option for most either.

When I was running OTR I would take my wife when ever she wanted to go. And we spent the night in some scary places. Over in Atlanta and Dallas, Illinois and Detroit, New Jersey to name a few.

If you want to "see the country", do "van life".

If you want to see the Interstate, go trucking.

You do you, but it seems to me you're looking to get into trucking for the wrong reasons.

    Good luck.

    Hopefully look pretty good :)
ha, ah yeah you can do that, but it depends on the company and their policies. There are several "in house" training companies, but do alot of research & ask alot of questions. As far as the trucking life, it is what you make it sometimes, enjoy the scenery.. take the road less travelled. But other times, it will whoop you bad, if anything can go wrong it will ~ Murphy's Law. With that all being said (and there's a whole lot more to be said) in my whole life being around trucks and then driving trucks for the last 27 years :)eek: Holy Cow! has it been that long!?? ) I have been to and seen some Amazing places all over North America ~ The entire lower 48, all of lower Canada from West to East and everywhere in between. Been on the Ferry/Ship to Newfoundland and also all over the Vancouver islands up to the Yukon and into Alaska, so there is quite a bit to see and do, but there are also lots and lots and lots of time constraints and ever increasing regulations. Of course lots of bad or less desirable locations to be stuck in too as already mentioned. It's not for everybody, but some enjoy it, some just make a living and some are completely miserable :p

Looks like this thread has been buried for the past month. Wonder if she's still monitoring her thread?
Yeah, he can get into long haul 48 states trucking and you can ride along as a passenger and do your
    online business from the truck.
He should attend a 160 hour cdl school and get all the endorsements on his cdl plus TWIC and Passport.
Passport or Passport Card is used for Canada runs.
Britton Transport and Southern Refrigerated Transport both have "day one" passenger program. This means you can ride with him the day his training is complete with the trucking company. Both these companies also allow a pet dog to ride along.
There's several more, but the wait time for you to ride along may be longer.
