The glass pays more but they are out atleast weeks at a time and they also go in and out of canada. The training time is a little longer for glass due to the fact that you also have to learn the flatbed securements. This is because sometimes they will back haul flatbed freight. Most of the guys on the glass side seem to enjoy it and miles seem to be pretty steady. The flatbed side you would be either south west regional or long haul, your choice. The only difference is long haul is out a minimum of 2 weeks and has a better chance of getting some longer runs every now and then. Both flat and glas you have to tarp but glass has more preloads than flat but both still have to secure teir own loads. as you have probably guessed with glass you have to be a lot more careful with your driving habbits and the angle of turns you take or you will break the glass. for where you live either would get you home fairly easy but you may get a chance for a dedicated run out of corsiocana tx with the glass. In the future you may also see a dedicated out of Grand prarie on the flat but that is not there yet just forcasting a little bit. I had a student from Grand Prarrie and he was home about every weekend and got chance to do his 10 hour break at home every so often thriugh the week. His typical running area was TX, OK, AR, LA, MO, & KS thid doesnt mean he didnt go to otherstaes but he primarily stayed in those areas. all of our drivers are subject to go to all 48 states but chances of you going you to far east or west are very slim. Myself I enjoy the flatbed side we dont have as many set appt. times we usually have open windows and we typically dont have run real late at night, however sometimes you fall on that schedule. Hopefully that helps a little bit to get you started but if you have any questions I can find out what I dont know just ask. Is there anything in paticular that you are looking for that make you decide on one or the other. What exactly are the things that are most important that would persuade your decision, such as more $, more hometome, stay closer to home, stay in the states??? this could lead into more questions that are directed more toward what you are wanting.
Been at Maverick Transportation for 6 six years and still enjoy it

Thanks hargis! Great info!!! I think $$ has more to do with my decision as well as running a dedicated run. Maybe I am way off on this, but glass sounds like a speicalized and dedicated run so that has an appeal to me. I am 54 so I have been warned about flatbed tarp work time and physical aspect. I am fairly good shape, but age is slowing taking its toll..ha.
Thanks!! -
Hargis is a great trainer if anyone's lucky enough to get him. I met him while I was with my trainer. I lasted with Maverick about 2 months solo. Anyways thanks for the help Hargis.

Well just as you had your issues with working here I see have my perks. First off you gave a personal opinion and you have every right to that, but she yes as you said Im gonna come back with mine. Not retaliation or brow beating but its good if people are interested in coming to work here then they need to hear good and bad opinions and make their own choice. And before I get started I wanted to say thanks about the comment you made earlier about me, who was your trainer and where and when did we meet? But back to business remember everyone has an opinion and yours was just heard I don't take that as beating up on me or the company. It is said in orientation that this is not just a job change this is a lifestyle change everything is different about this industry than most other working industries, they are up front with that. The "high turn over rate" that you speak of is partly to do with that very thing. Not everyone is cut out to handle this industry and a lot of people are not honest with themselves from the start. The very beginning of this this is to get to know you and what you need for you and your family, is it more money or being home or both. Because let's be honest most folks come to driving for the money and think they can deal with the rest for that. The average turn over rate in this industry is around 180% and the turnover rate here at Maverick is around 75%, all of a sudden that "high" number doesn't seem to be as bad. This is a job you have to give time to, you don't come out of orientation and training knowing everything there is about being a proffessionnal truck driver it takes time. Especial since we are under federal regulations that we have to follow. This is the job and that is going to take at least 6 months to start getting enough experience in to make a decision as to whether or not you want to continue. It takes an average of that long start figuring out your time management and how to pick your speed up on securing and tarping and figuring out how to get where your going and let's not forget to trip plan all your rods to take, load checks, fueling, where to park for the night, how far can I make it to, and how is this going to affect tomorrow. See the deal is your not going to start as fast as aor as comfortable as the guy that has been doing this for a while, it takes time to build all those abilities. I didn't even mention all the traffic in big cities and accidents we have to go thru, all of which cost us time. And yes time is money because we only have 14 hours a day to do everything we need to and then it is time for a 10 hour break. But we won't get into that right after all it isnt class and we are not in the truck..lol. See there is a lot to learn and it all takes time so you said you gave 2 months is that the whole time you where here at Maverick or was that how long you where in your truck on your own. Because either way you got a bad taste in your mouth and a better opportunity at home parted ways with the company. Winter is typically our slow season on flatbed side and this why you have to utilize you time and make the most out your time and day because your availability (remaining hours for that day)is a big part of what gets you your next load. Also you have to remember that freight dictates everything in this industry, if there isn't any freight to haul we don't have anything to haul to keep moving. But its not all to blame on the industry, or the company, but sometimes its just being honest with yourself. The good weeks have always out weighed the bad weeks during my time here and if I wouldn't have given time I would not have found that out. I had real rough start to this job 6 years ago but I didn't let it get to me and the rest speaks for itself. As far some driver calling in on you, that doesn't surprise me because we do some drivers that think that's what helps you move up in the company. But theat call in is always followed up by calling the driver in question and getting your side of the story. The comment about Maverick being full of backstabbers and things you make it sound like high school all over again. I will have to disagree with you on that because first off a 2 month time frame doesn't give you enough time to know enough people here, and by all means in my opinion doesnt give you the right to categorize everyone that works here like that. But its all opinions, and if you only had 2 months here then you didn't get to see our busy season and the way things even out to our favor. Hut got to go for now time to start my day.
RERM and Bass Ackwards Bo Thank this. -
Now remember i mentioned that this call had nothing to do with trucking/load securement/driving. A dedicated driver in WV called in on me for not "waving hi"/making friendly contact with him. I was just simply not in the mood to chat around that day and kinda ignored him, next thing I know Mavericks calling me...Seriously... -
Im in the process of going to maverick. Application prossesing at the moment. Is this a good choice and what can u tell me about the company and is this truely a good choice
