Very excited today! Short background here, contract dried up in February as a DOD contractor for the last 6 years. Had joined that job directly after discharge in 04 from the Army and a few combat tours. Was in Huntsville, AL decided this was a good time to make a move back home to Florida finally after being gone since roughly 1983. Had no idea what would happen but had the trucking bug at the front of my brain, always have for well over 20 years just never pulled the trigger on it.
Found this site and did extensive research and looked into all options for getting into the biz. Ended up choosing Swift as my main target mostly due to their terminal in Ocala, FL which is less than an hour from where I live. Plus, every thread I've ever read here has something bad or good to say about all carriers and at some point you have to make a decision or go crazy.
Finished the app process yesterday, heard from recruiter today with a thumbs up on the app. Finished the online assessment quiz and have work verification form to fax back and various other forms. DMV records are being pulled so looks like it's going forwardAm looking at tentatively starting their school in TN first part of June. Wish me luck, and I'll keep a running log of my experiences here! Thank you all for all of the very informative threads and posts here. This site has been a bane in my research and decision making process up to this point and I'm sure in the future.
Beginning my Process with Swift

I hope to see you there! I might be a week or two in front of you at Millington but, like you, I'm looking forward to getting into school, getting some training and then......go where they say go!
There are several Swift drivers here on the board. They are extremely helpful and supportive. Swift is the favorite target for a lot of humor, much of it good-natured....some of it's just "jumping on the bandwagon".
Good luck! I hope to see you in Millington...Oldnew!Schmidtrock Thanks this. -

SWIFT STINKS!!!! Just kidding; they're not that terrible.
No matter where you end up, go in with a good attitude and you'll do well. One of the nice things about Swift is the variety of styles of trucking. They have flatbeds, reefers, heavy haul, dedicated accounts, dedicated runs, intermodal, local, regional, OTR, and Canada runs. Get some experience (6-12 mo) then try to find the niche that fits your needs best.
As I've said in previous threads, I did 22 mos with Swift. In that time I did regional heavy haul and reefers (150-400miles), dedicated 160 mile runs, Intermodal (rail cans) and finally daycab work. I only left because I found an uber-job ($23/hr, home nightly).
Best of luck and don't be shy about asking for advise!
PS: don't be shy about short runs 100-300 miles! Note the sliding payscale on the Swift site. They can add up quite nicely.Last edited: May 6, 2010

Looking forward to following your journey

Since when did Swift go sliding pay scale? When I was comparing back in January and February, I was told 0-3 mo = .26, 4-6 = .29, 7-9 = .31, and 9-12 = .33, with yearly raises beyond that.

Swift has been on the sliding pay scale for over 2 years ! you still get .26 0-3 mo and so on. But if you run shorter miles you make more per mile ! With the sliding scale. Not that bad of a deal !!
