What did the other companies tell you they wanted 2 year? 3 or 5+

I am guessing 2+years opens some options..... and 5+ even more......

I think things have changed a lot since I started 11 years ago as a No experience IOO. It was super hard getting insurance in fact my first insurance company quit doing it. I tried getting a no experience driver on last year and we could not use them. My agent had a super hard time getting him insured. Only happened because he was teaming with a 30 year vet.

I was told we need a minimum of 1 year CDL exp and it won't be easy.

If your making money I would stay put for 6 months.....Then I would be looking into other options....

As far as the carriers go, 2 years driving. When it comes to my own authority I found that having an LLC in operation for two years, showing good profitability, drops the cost on everything; equipment, insurance, and loans should they be needed. Just jumping in with both feet is still possible but you would be spending a lot of money to do it.

When it comes to trucking liability insurance, the main factor is how long your dot number has been active. The two years of operating as an llc leased to a carrier won't make much difference.

Final Settlement received for March. After all expenses the business made 5500.00 in March. If I can do that every month that would be great. April is going to be an expensive month. This months I will need to have the oil changed, PM service, DEF doser, DPF clean, DEF filter clean, I am getting the Flow Below put on next week, and I am getting my hood damage fixed from the hit and run. The emission system stuff comes around every 200-250 k miles and will be the bulk of my maintenance expense for the month. I will probably spend about 2k getting all this done. That is what I have estimated.

This particular agent was describing what he looks for. Someone fresh like me is harder to insure. He told me if I come back to him with two years of operation as an LLC with the corresponding increase in experience he could get me a much better deal. Having a DOT number in operation was not as important to him or the other parties I spoke with. I guess it depends who you get a hold of regarding what they see as important.

Ok man, but are you absolutely sure you didn't misunderstand the agent? I ask cause you seem hung up on this idea having an llc will help your insurance rates... the business being am llc, s corp, c corp, sole proprietorship, or partnership, should have very little effect on the price of insurance. I've bought trucking insurance before, and the only thing any of the dozen or so companies i got quotes from cared about (besides the obvious such as driver record, value of truck, amount of cargo ins, etc) was how long i had been operating as a carrier (which is where the age of my dot number comes into play), they didn't care two cents about if i had experience leased to a carrier or not.

Basically, new carriers pay a lot more than someone that has been out here a couple years.

I understand the difference and he specifically said that having an LLC in operation helps. It's all about the big picture. It paints a picture that I'm not as risky as someone who is jumping right in without a business history. It is possible that another agent could feel the exact opposite; this was his assessment.

Having an active DOT would help in the future as well. The longer it's in operation, the lower the rates. I am speaking from a start up perspective. As a start up it helps to show you have a stable foundation to stand on.

He's feeding you a line of BS. You'll see when you get ready to actually pay for the insurance. The bar on that is really high and rising every year.

I am trying to stay out and run and he was like, we have a FL run for Monday. That was a resounding no from me. If I have to deadhead from little rock to Rogers just to get a good load I'll do it before I do that run again.

I forgot what day it was. I received my final settlement for March which brings the new total to 7000.00. This after all expenses including salary. I was surprised how little I spent on fuel. My fuel cost came out to .275 cpm. I'll be spending a lot in April though, for maintenance expenses. The truck is due for lots of things.
