I am a "real" owner operator as much as the next guy. I run a business and operate in such a way as to make a profit. If you want to vent your frustrations about rates and fake owner operators, you can do it elsewhere. I pass along my experiences in hopes that it can help someone else out; not bring them down. Leased with someone is a means to an end for me so I can get my own numbers and have control. Running under the authority of a carrier you have no control.

Trucking is a low margin industry and you have to work everyday on running as lean as you can. If I am putting .30 cpm or greater into the business account in profits I am doing very well. And to be clear, by profits I do mean after ALL expenses excluding taxes. I'll keep trucking and enjoy what I do and I'll leave the complaining to you.

It's amazing how many drivers want to live everyone else's life for them .They all have MBA's, They're all making eight bucks a mile and brokers are kneeling in prayer that they hold the steering wheel for them

Elogs.....both probably love them. If I ran nothing but interstates and pavement, I'd probably love them too. Sorry, but I been around too long, and have experienced too much to ever think running for 30 cents a mile profit or having a computer tell me to go to sleep is acceptable. Call it complaining, call it unwilling to adjust. But I refuse to keep working for less and keep having to put in more time. Good luck to you!

I been at this 20 years. I've owned trucks and drove company trucks. I run the states currently. I've done a lot, from flat deck btrains across canada, to tandem van, reefers, steel, plate and coils. I've hauled wood, in the bush, where there are no roads. Grossing 180000lbs. running %30 grades with 800 feet to try and get enough momentum so you only gotta drop 4 gears instead of backing down. I've run my own authorities and booked my own freight. Am I any better than you or the next guy? Not at all. Anyone can do what I've done, and there are many out there who have. But at the end of the day, being profitable is what this thread is about. If the OP is content banking 30 cents a mile....good for him. But that doesn't change my opinion in that the 1000's of gyuys just like him out there are part of the problem.

He is not really part of any problem. Trucking is a low skilled job with too few barriers to entry. There will always be a lot of freight that gets moved around for peanuts. There will always be plenty of carriers out here that will. If someone isn't willing to step outside the box that's what the future of freight hauling holds for them. That shouldn't really affect you if you have your own little niche.

I agree with pretty much everything you said here with one very big exception. We have about a fifty cent per mile difference in "doing just fine"

And that difference is very simple, there are much better places to lease a truck to.
