Yeah, I think that's realistic, there is usually quite a bit missing from the big picture when we only have one side of the story.

Yes, I did not read that part. He was offered a truck to drive and refused. I wouldn’t pay him either..

Not really. He was offered a tool that would not actually do the job. I.e. have a place to sleep without the uncompensated hassle of finding a restaurant and lodging fit for a truck.

In my mind it's no diffrent than wanting the driver to use a rented uhaul to move the freight and have to make 4 trips, but only get paid for one. Hey the job got done and that's all that matters I guess.....

I feel like the driver should be taking the circumstances into consideration. It's just you, the boss, and the truck, you ain't with some major corporation that you can just be a steering wheel holder with. Work with him for Pete's sake. I believe that he's doing all he can and his driver is not helping the situation at all, let alone trying to help.....

Thank you all for the replies. Imo by reading the replies majority said he should of took the day cab. As long as I was willing to pay for room an board with some extra money. That’s what I’ll go with. I understand firing him, but it’s hard to fire someone you grew up with since kids. Yes he screw up a lot, but he also have made me a lot of money in a years time. Cost me some too. Oh and for the ones who got me confused I’m a driver myself so I know the road. For those who said I would of been left that’s cause your parents didn’t teach you #### about loyalty. If someone is there for you thick an thin an you’ll just up an leave cause you mad you ain’t ####. If you as a driver run through 5k in three weeks you’ll never have nothing anyway frfr. I would still have something I would wait for you an I would of took the day can, but hey that’s just me. Everything I stated are facts. My driver has been driving 7 years an he even said I’m better to him than Any major company has been to him. Again I was just asking because I’m new to being a Op. I still thank you all Good an Bad.

Why not get cousin Niko to run the truck? He always pulls through. Then afterwards you can go bowling.

even thought you have known him since childhood, he is using that against you as leverage. when he worked at Hartt as you said in your first posting, he claimed he got paid for being broke down. Hartt i assume is a much bigger company than yours, and i'll go out on a limb here and call his bluff big time on that claim.

i'll bet you dollars to donuts, when his truck was broke down (at Hartt or any number of places he worked at), they offered him a spare truck, and if he refused them, he'd be toast.

i still stand behind my opinion of firing him. bottom line, he's refusing work, costing you money.

friendships aside, when it's costing YOU MONEY for him sitting home, refusing to work, it's time to clean the closet.....

do as you wish, i'm outta this lost cause thread.

In the real world if you want to keep him and don’t have another truck available for him to drive. in the mean time although you don’t have to it would sure as hell help him with bills. Otherwise tell him I’m sorry I don’t have work for you right now find another job.
    Friend or no friend.
Loyalty does go a long way but, work is work. And if it’s one thing I’ve learned is don’t mix friends and business unless you have to.

I would have given him the option to drive the day cab or sit. He could file for unemployment.
He wouldn't get any money from me while sitting. He was given an option to work.
He said he would only work 2 days then wanted the weekend home.
I'm pretty sure he is using your friendship to his advantage. Birthday celebrations are for children. Celebrate it when he gets back home.
In the trucking industry it is not uncommon to not be home even on the major holidays.

Yes family first is nice to have. Sitting out of work for three weeks and then NOT want to go back to work.
Time to find a different driver.
    HE is using you.

Friends are friends, business is business. Neither mix well.

Bottom line for you, does he make you a profit. Can you trust him to check the truck from now on, or will you have to make sure you get yourself under the truck and make sure its being properly maintained.
If you keep him, I would make sure someone else looks at the truck every chance possible.
    Good luck.
