If it was me I would tell Dave not to touch the transmitter portion and leave that part stock since stock radios talk further than Dave's radios but I would tell him to put the Sanyo 2SC2999 transistor in the receiver and drop the noise floor as low as he can and call it good.

I just had an opportunity to listen to one of Bells radios. Suffice it to say, it was muffled and difficult to understand although I did hear the guy from 15 miles away I couldn't make out the words because it was so distorted and muffled. I just traded a couple of my president hr2510 for a Galaxy Note 5 phone and the guy got an opportunity to hear what Mark Sherman's radios sound like and he was pretty impressed with the Fidelity and clarity
