The negative peaks touch at whatever point the technician made it happen.
If he wants 100% modulation with the mic gain knob at zero he can set it up that way. If he wants 100% modulation with the mic gain halfway he can set it up that way also. If he wants 100% modulation with the mic gain wide open he can do that too.
Different microphones have different output voltages requiring different mic gain settings.
It's kind of difficult to generalize when there are so many variables involved.

    Newbie to forum.
I just purchased a tuned 29 from Bells Also purchased an Astatic 636 noise canceling mic.
So running mic gain at half to 3/4 is recommended? I want to be heard but don't want others not wanting to hear me. I personally don't like talking with drivers with a bone stock radio. To hard for me to hear behind the gear noise. I also don't like echo boards or distortion. Loud and clear is what I'm hoping for.

Should be able to run your Mic gain wide open on that radio with no issues at all.

Since Screwdriver @ Bells is unable to do consistent work it would be necessary to connect it to an oscilloscope to find The Sweet Spot.
We would be unable to advise you where to set the mic gain without the proper tools.

Set your Mic gain wide open if there's a problem most drivers who know anything about radios will tell you. Your boy doesn't do consistent work all the time either there buddy. Hate to tell ya what you never want to hear. THE TRUTH WILL ALWAYS SET YOU FREE.

And you can run a Ranger Sra 198 wide open on the Mic gain on just about any-all radios. I KNOW THIS I'VE RUN ONE ON VARIOUS HIGH POWERED RADIOS. ASTATIC THATS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN I KNOW BETTER.

You need to go to Bells website and read his little article on modulation limiters. He says that he likes to set the radio at 120 to 130% modulation and adjust the microphone for final modulation of 105 to 110 % , so I guess the mic gain would need to be set right to achieve the desired level, but set where , your guess is as good of mine. Me personally I have a Cobra 29 Chrome that vr4 ( AMC control) has been adjusted up to 100% and I run Dynamike wide open and radio is loud and clear, and on meter 4 watt carrier and 16 watt pep.

In addition Im not sure its really necessary to even turn modulation to 100%, I say this because the other day I was talking to another driver and he was using a bone stock 29 lx with cobra stock mic and I couldnt believe how good his radio sounded, and being stock was probably set at factory 85% modulation so I wonder if there is really a significant ,noticeable, difference between 85 and 100%? I have always been a strong proponent of peak and tunes but have now just recommended an alignment or run stock, and for most of the past year and a half I have used a BC 980 stock and have no problem with transmit and receive range.

No a radio does not always need to be set at 100% modulation. My 955 was supposedly set at a 100 watt deadkey. It was actually set at 50 watts it now has a 100 watt deadkey. Which is right for a 400 watt radio. The modulation was turned all the way up which made the radio actually over-modulate. It's set correctly by a excellent tech. The mic you use find the one that works and don't change it. I run a SRA 198 put on my astatic no good then put on my re-worked original Rk-56.. Huge mistake....Because I would say what Rabbi said input voltage of each radio mic. Changing to a different mic twice killed my audio thought I'd have to go inside the radio. I put the 198 back on and it took 3 full days to get my Audio back to what it was.
