Seems kind of high priced to me! The radios aren't much over a $100 bucks new!

Little high if you ask me too. I guess youre paying for bench time, tuning, etc. I woukd throw another $100 at it, and get a Galaxy 94hp. I absolutely loved mine, so clean and loud...and i could actually talk on it for a while without it getting too hot.

Good guy, good work. Bought one of his radios as a back-up and havent switched back yet. When completed he will send you a video file showing the work as well as the unit transmitting and receiving.

I buy from both Doug and Screwdriver, and they both do excellent work, and have no problem buying from either of them again...

However...Buying from Bells, it may take 2 to 3 weeks before you get your order...Another good thing with Bells tho, is he makes a video of every radio he sells, and tunes, and then posts it on YouTube so you can see what it was doing at his shop before mailed out! Just be prepared to wait a few weeks on it...

Doug on the other hand in most cases will have your order done and in the mail the next day after you place the order...no video, but very fast turn around and no "whacky-pack-tune-up" like some shops advertise...

what they do is change 2 transistors, 2 diodes and a choke all of whuch cost maaybe 7.00 to 10 bucks. If you add in the cost of the radio they might have 50 to 60 bucks in it. Change the mic too wjile your at it. good noise canceling mic goes a long way

AM isn't really dead any more than CW or RTTY.. It's fun!

The blue one uses plate modulation. Plate modulation is the only way to go for legal limit AM, unless you either need SSB and other modes on that transmitter, or you just prefer an amplifier. It ought to be mentioned.

Plate modulation simply put uses a large audio amplifier to feed the signal right into the power supply line to the final transmitting amplifier device. The modulator has to be rated at least 1/2 the power that the RF stage consumes. So it is a big amp. Inside the old style CBs, you can find a modulation transformer, and when you transmit, it uses the power from the CB's receive audio amplifier. That is, the amp that drive the CB speaker in receive also acts as the modulator in transmit mode.

AM is not used very much compared to the much more popular and efficient SSB mode but there are still many who enjoy it because getting the most from a real AM transmitter can be a challenge, as opposed to the pushbutton ease of a SSB set. AM is a part of the hobby that many technical and handy people enjoy today because they tweak up those grid modulated sets and they often like to build their own equipment.

1957 Tucker home built. I have restored this, still working a few bugs out of it. It took Mr. Tucker 2 years to build it.

Harris- 1KW on any mode. Uses linear amp section. AM/RTTY/digital/SSB 24x7 on this heavy duty commercial set. My friend Francesco has it now.

This plate modulated AM transmitter was built by a man in Ecuador with limited funds but it is not short on capability. Look at all the big power supply parts.. It's a thing of beauty!

As for CB, it is a case for SSB. What a pity it is still AM. Because of having only the 40 fixed "channels", it can be crowded and with SSB you turn the 40 AM channels into 80 SSB channels. The weak transmitters in a CB are also a problem that SSB might help because for technical reasons, SSB has some advantages over AM so it's better for distance, apples to apples.. And it would eliminate those squeals from interfering stations that are off frequency thanks to some Screwdriver King. But no one wants to use it, no one wants to spend the extra money on the radio. I used to spend the extra money and buy SSB CB radios like the Uniden PC122 and Cobra 148GTL, but who is there to talk to except skip shooters? They don't help down the road.
