It's because of people like you I'm paying $23.95 for a room in Texas at Super 8. When will the madness stop.

This is an interesting thread with lots of good points. One of the biggest things to me will be cycling coolant to keep the engine warm. I live in WI and found free parking but no electric hook up for block heater. Is an APU the only choice or is there another way to ensure everything doesn't freeze if I'm away for a few days?

You can buy an Espar D5 bunk heater that heats the bunk and coolant. Your only problem is the batteries will be toast without an APU to keep them up when needed.

Yeah that's what I was figuring. Either way I end up needing an APU just to get through winter. I'm not at all opposed to getting one but if there's a cheaper option out there I will look into it. Haven't even bought a truck yet so I have some time

A Rigmaster will do it all for you and has a generator that will run the block heater. You should also install an Espar D2 bunk heater. Leave it set on like 60 when you leave the truck and everything will be nice and toasty when you come back. You don't have to worry about the batteries. The Rigmaster will start and stop as needed to charge the batteries. You can buy a used Rigmaster for around $2,500 and maybe $500 to have installed. That's what I have since 2006. Very happy.

That doesn't sound too bad. I'm jumping to flatbed when I get my truck, any issues with the headache rack interfering with either mounting the APU or the condenser on the back of the cab? Thought I read about someone having issues once upon a time

I was looking at underbunk ac units made by Dometic, in the brochure it said you can mount the condenser under the cab if it won't work to mount it to the back wall.
