I wish I could use an APU that my company uses. It uses the batteries for the AC and fuel for the heater but both are completely silent. The reason I want it silent is so that I can park near stores without anyone complaining about the noise. Some APUs sound like lawnmowers.

For what they cost you better be able to run all at once.

BTW all you need is an inverter for that as long as your truck is running since the alternator pushes out a ot of amps to run things like the microwave for a short while. I am a company driver but bought a 3000 watt inverter myself and hooked it up and can power my microwave, TV, cooling fan, lamp, and laptop all at the same time. Really the coffee maker and microwave are the only things that use a lot of power. When you say computer I assume you mean laptop.

I agree completely that a inverter can handle all of that, though not without a constant drain on your batteries, and like someone mentioned earlier for what real APU's cost... They best be able to run electricity too not just A/C & Heat.. Not to mention as a Owner Operator, the idea of a all in one apu, is to help my bottom line and reduce wear & tear on the motor from idling and my fuel costs. As a company driver I'd track the fuel usage, and it staggered me as to how much fuel the truck would consume just to regulate the temperature in the cab, Last company I worked for it was almost in access of 15k in a year just from idling time.. APU can pay for itself in savings in the first hot summer.

& for the guy that suggested a roof mounted a/c fine and dandy for a old beater long nose or something but not for a 2016 0 mile truck that I will be financing, a APU I can rip off the stepdeck if I know I will loose the truck for whatever reason, I wouldn't give the finance company a free a/c if that's what it came down to.. Just thinking of all angles here..

That all being said , does anyone use a Tripac all-in-one ? The newer ones seem to have decent reviews ?

Yes my point was that you do not leave a microwave running for hours. My company uses an electric APU and the batteries last about 30 hours and then they get low and I let the truck idle for about 30 minutes to squeeze another four hours out of them so I can get a restart and go. I also idle for a few minutes when using the microwave and high wattage handheld vacuum cleaner. The rest of the time I am using my low wattage laptop, TV, and lights which can remain on for 30 hours on APU batteries. Despite the bad reviews which I am sure are false coming from truckers, I plan to get an all electric APU since my truck remains silent but it does burn fuel to power the heater. I don't like idling a huge loud engine just to run the AC that is silly to me.

I don't remember where the article was posted but this is the picture from it. Home grown APU installation. They found him dead from carbon monoxide poisoning

Left lane cut a hole in the roof of a brand new Western Star a couple of years ago and installed a roof mounted unit. There are threads here with pics. It was paint matched to the truck, a very clean install, didn't look half assed at all. A great way to save about $7,000--$8,000.
