I've been scouring this forum for quite some time now looking for some answers. I haven't seen much about individuals that reside in Minnesota and what school/company may be the best option up in my area. Here's a brief background of myself. I'm a 39 year old that comes from a trucking family. My father drove for 45+ years. I previously have held my class a permit a couple times and ran with my dad otr. The first time we we ran together didn't work out because the truck we bought was nothing but a money pit and we couldn't get along while on the road. The second time we drove for atlas and had to leave because my father's health declined and he was forced to retire before I was able to take over for him. So needless to say I'm not new to this industry and have all 48 states under my belt already. I'm hoping to find a company that will give me a shot without going to school, but I know that's a challenge due to insurance companies. I have a spotless driving record. No traffic violations or accidents, no dwi or dui's along with no drug charges, and no criminal history to speak of. The only negative thing against me is I had a spinal fusion 3 years ago. I'd love to pull full flat or step deck, but realistically I should hold off until I'm in top notch shape in the years to come in which I'll pursue later. But for now I guess it's either van, reefer, or tanker? I've filled out apps before that would get sent to trucking companies looking for drivers in my area. I get calls and emails everyday, but I refuse to work for companies like swift, cr england, crst, werner, and others similar to them. I know that limits my options, because of where I live. But I don't wanna jump from company to company. I appreciate any advice or offers I can get, because I'm currently on information overload and unsure what to do. Thank you in advance!

    Where are you in Minnesota?
Jim Palmer Trucking is a reefer outfit in Missoula, Montana but not sure they hire where you are. They have their own cdl school in Missoula.

I thought about them, because I prefer to run west of the Mississippi if I can. I'm about 30 minutes northwest of Minneapolis.

Fortune Transportation is a great company with regular runs to NM, CO, ID, WY. I was leased to them and loved it.

Smith Transportation runs that way a little more often.

Johnson Feed has a strong presence in your area.

Kottke Trucking is another good one.

JR Schugel is also near you.

I cant speak to training companies, but we are short on drivers here. If you can get your cdl on your own, you stand a good chance at a local gig. Look into bay n bay. They do line haul work for us. Based out of Rosemont right by the refinery. They do dry bulk as well

I'm in southwest mn. The lumber plant I work for runs four trucks. Steps and flats. Used to be two years experience requirement, then one year, now it's a valid cdl. Everybody needs drivers. Also hard to find flatbed guys in the cold weather.

Magnum might be a good choice for you as well. You would need to get your cdl but the will reimburse you for your tuition. They have a terminal in coon rapids. If you desired you could also switch over to their ltl or dedicated division after you get a year of experience under your belt if it's isn't for you.

Their otr trucks are pretty well equipped for driver comfort as well. Tripack apu, inverter, etc.

I would consider them one of the better training companies. The do run more south east than west however and it is reefer work but I think they would be a decent choice for getting that first year under your belt.
