HEY Fellow Truckers! I know this is a subjective question but, I have been out of the owner operator business for quite sometime now and I'm fixing to jump back in........I use to own two trucks with trailers in the early 90's to 96 and decided I wanted to get out of it for awhile and be home with the kids and momma, so I took a local/ regional job driving .

I'm open to who might be a good company to work for? I've pretty much done it all. Flatbed , reefer, heated, delivered diesel and gas etc....... I live just north of Houston and would like to get home at least every other weekend and make some decent money. I thought I had a few good companies figured out but then following more research I find a few are not what they advertised to be............ Miller Transporters is on my list, UPS, Fed Ex custom critical, FFE ( worked for them as O/O in 90's) , Road Runner ( found a lot of bad stuff)

Anyway,,,,Any suggestions would be great! Thanks, be safe!

    Vinni-

I live here in the Houston area myself and I just want to clarify something, you haven't drove since 1996 or you gave up being an owner operator in 1996? At any rate, I've heard Landstar being O/O friendly (check out some of the threads on here to make your judgement) and I believe Booker Transportation out of Amarillo, TX is okay as well. You didn't mention if you wanted to go flat/step, van, reefer or tankers and how new of a truck are you going to acquire? Let us know and myself and others who are reading your post will try to help you out as much as possible.

Farm2Fleet is supposedly one of the best around these days & you pick your loads.

I see a lot about to farm2fleet on here and seems to be good. Im leased to Miller transporters and its not bad. I think the Channelview terminal does a lot of dedicated and I am not impressed with the dedicated rates. I run system and I do pretty good. I average over $2 a mile all miles including deadhead. the downfall to Miller is they do run electronic logs. Mercer out of Louisville KY is a good company along with BESL Transfer out of Cincinnati Ohio. from what I hear from flatbedder friends of mine are that flatbed rates are down this year. Ergon does dedicated hauling their own product and they seem to be pretty good rate wise but are on Elogs also. I do have a friend leased on to Ergon and he is very happy with them.

craggy I am currently a flatbedder and yes rates and loads has been a roller coaster ride but the company I am leased to, we mostly deal with machinery and oilfield stuff and I am not too happy about my work capacity this week (did one load this week).

I have also entertained the thought about going back into hauling chemicals in short, if you have flatbed and/or tanker experience, that's where the best paying money is at right now. Now adding to that, south Texas Oilfields are booming but I haven't found and further information whereas I can do my investigation so that I can determine if I am going to benefit long term without having to purchase a belly dump trailer or a frac sand trailer.

I would avoid any and all tracking bs. check the small companies in a reasonable distance from home. the best ones do not have to advertise, so seek them out. call and call and call. look at the names on the trucks in your neck of the woods. it worked for me, but i am in the process going on my own. tired of losing 25-30% of the line haul on $3-4 per mile loads. (thats .75 to 1.20 per loaded mile im giving up and tired of it)

no company will be perfect for everyone, but you should put mercer on your list. hands down the best in my experience. I've been doing this since 98 when I bought my first truck (never been a co driver) and I've never been happier since switching to them this last winter. wish I would have 15 years ago.
