    Greetings Trucking Forum.

Although I've been lurking here for a while, I wish my first official post wasn't begging for your advice on what is likely a tired topic, but I seem to have backed myself into a corner and would greatly appreciate the insight of anyone who's been in a similar situation.

Having saved up my money I intended to attend classes at a local technical college in order to get my CDL. The college's administration was difficult to get in touch with and by the time I did, the class had just been filled. I could wait until January and try and get into the class again, but I would really like to start driving as soon as possible.

I'm not horribly interested in making money, or getting some cushy local job, I just want to drive. I put 200+ miles on my car a night just driving the back roads of Wisconsin aimlessly, I've been doing so since I was 17. I find I can't think straight around other people, and being alone in my car is the only time I really feel comfortable and acute. I have a couple friends across the U.S. but no real family tying me down. My driving record is clean, my free time endless, and reading what people often describe as the drawbacks of a trucking lifestyle only seem to appeal more to me.

Having recently had the ability to drive my friends '04 Freightliner I really got a feel for it. I know this is a career I would do well in.

My question is, what's the best way to get driving as quickly as possible? I have a little money so classes aren't really a problem but I'd like to get the input of some people who really know the business.

Are there any local companies that would train me?

Local schools likely to get me hired?

Do you happen to know anyone who needs a rookie driver who'll work dirt cheap in the Milwaukee area?

Thanks to anyone who took the time to read this overly long post.

"Not horribly interested in making money" WTH??
You my friend are certainly a purist!
Regarding your schooling, are there any private schools around in the area? Check the yellow pages. That's the route I went and they started new students every week. Most classes had 5 or less students. I schooling was quicker than tech school and I was on the road faster.
If I'm not mistaken, some big company's offer their own CDL schooling, room and board in included. Those costs are taken from your checks when you hit the road with them.
Hope you can find something that works for you.

By the way.... welcome to the forum!

Thanks for the Welcome, man and the advice. There's actually a driving school just outside Madison I was looking at, but it's significantly more expensive than a technical college, if I could supplement the money I already had with something other than a loan I'd do it in a heart beat.

Too clarify I'm interested in money only so much as I'm interested in eating. I lived poor my whole life, so once I finally realized I was in a position to make money myself I found I had more than my lifestyle required. I buy all my clothes second hand, live on less than $40 in groceries a week, and I can't remember the last time I slept on a bed simply because I found an old oak door with some fatigue padding to be an adequate replacement.

Living cheap can be fun, and if you have good work while you're doing it you'll be surprised what neat toys you can suddenly afford. :biggrin_25523:

If you can live like that you will probably do very well making money in the trucking industry. The cheaper you live out there on the road the more that goes in your bank. You sound like a free spirit, I think you will end up loving trucking. Many, many good adventures! Stay away from the big companies! ie; swift, werner, england etc...
