People who say there is no difference between a Cat filter and a different brand, have never cut one open. They may be made at the same factory but they are made to Cat specs. Get the hack saw out.

All Cat's should run a 1212 primary filter any finer and the restriction when they are used about 10,000 miles and they restrict to much, cutting down on fuel preasure and flow. Many people use Fleetguard, and we did as well, the 1000's and the 1001's did not work for a full service interval. on a Cat
I cut apart a Donaldson and a Cat secondary and they looked the same to me. that was about 10 years ago, when the Cat filters, primary, were twisting inside the can.
Just a thought! -
I run Donaldson's or CAT. Both are good filters imo. My primary filter is the old screen and the secondary is CAT 1R-0749. Tried Fleetgaurd but my seat of the pants, they just don't have the same pep in the step as Donaldson or CAT's. Sometimes you can catch CAT filters on sale at a CAT house and they are competitive with Donaldson or other lower priced brands, but only if you're buying by the case. If you're buying one filter at a time you're always going to pay more. A lot of folks around here also run Baldwin filters. Everyone has their own preferences there just like motor oils, or ford versus chevy. Not all filters are equal.

FS 1212 works best on my BXS

Maybe its just in my head, but my Acert seems to run the best with Cat filters.
peterbilt_2005 and EverLuc Thank this. -
Sorry if this is a thread hijack but does anyone use a Racor filter? Thats all we use on the marine diesels I've worked on. It's nice having a clear bowl on the bottom to check for contaminants. Looking online I see they are part of Parker.

I thought so too at first(you ain't putting a Cummins filter on my cat), and my mechanic GAVE me a FS1212 To try (not just any fleet guard will do, it HAS TO BE a FS1212). My restriction gauge starts out a lot lower and stays lower throughout the service life(8-10,000 miles in the summer,10-12,000 in winter). My first thought was lower restriction probably means not catching as much dirt, but after making him cut open 3 secondary filters to compare and seeing little to no difference in the amount of contaminants getting by the primary filter. Most people will try to tell you FS1000 is just as good and might be as far as how much dirt/water it collects but it raises my restriction gauge over double throughout the service life. Oscar you are probably closer to being right (probably all in my head) than the rest of us, with quality control in this industry being what it has become.

So those that run the FS1212 fuel water separator, what do you run for the other filter?

I missed the part where he said it was a primary. Mine's got a screen in a canister that gets cleaned & re-used.
