I was with Crete Carrier for 18 years.
They will hire some new drivers.
Companies generally pay by the mile.
Imo, look for practical pay. It's based on practical truck routing. Some companies use shortest route to pay drivers.
Most companies don't pay you based on the odometer of the truck.
Practical route based mileage pay will be very, very close to what you drove.
Shortest route could very likely mean you'll drive alot of miles for free. It could be 10,000 miles free/year when you consider not getting paid for 7 or 8% of the miles you drove.
For those who may want to doubt me:
One year, I drove 150,000 miles. I got paid 138,000 miles. Like working one month for free.
Anyway, Crete puts a new driver out with an experienced driver trainer for 2 months. The trainer must have years of experience and a clean record.
Crete actually has standards. Some companies don't.
Also, Crete pays better than most other big fleets.
I've been off the road since 2013.
Maybe other companies have improved and raised their pay.
Crete would be a good place to get experience and you will very likely earn more than other similar companies out there.
Crete pulls Van's. If you want to learn flatbed then Crete won't work.
But, Crete does own Hunt Transportation based in Omaha,Nebraska. I don't know if they hire trainees. (Not JB Hunt. Different company).
I don't own stock in Crete. I don't work for them.
But I know they will most likely pay you better than many of their competitors.
And remember practical pay. Unless you wanna drive some miles for free like I did in my early years of truckin' .PNwMtFlwr Thanks this. -
The whole veteran thing is just a recruiting tool for suckers.. They may slap some veteran stickers on the side of "your" truck... that's about the only difference. Pick the best of the worst and hope you can stomach it for more than a year. Then look for something specialized
ParochialNimrod, Knucklehead and Speed_Drums Thank this. -

I am a 10 year Veteran of the US Air Force, when I hired on with Swift, because I am a Veteran, I am earning 3.5 cents a mile more. Unsure if the same still applies and how long served will impact how many extra cents a mile you will get. But, that is my experience.
Good Luck to you!!!PNwMtFlwr Thanks this.
