Guess decision depends on driver's perspective -ie: we're doing same thing differently.
To reactivate my CDLA, I also only have go to DMV with a new DOT physical card, pay $17.50.
Best option to maintain CDL "just in case"?

I will have the option to reactivate my CDL for $17.50-
Therefore why would I spend $267 to accomplish the same thing along with the time/trouble getting 3 physicals?
I appreciate that risk tolerance varies, and that for you and some others paying to keep your CDL qual active while not driving for 6 years is worth it.
For me it is not worth it -I don't see unacceptable risk in the way I'm doing this.
-And there's been no evidence provided that my decision to deactivate with the right to reinstate for a fraction of $267 is wrong.
I'm retired -and part of the reason is that I never paid for anything I didn't need. Decisions like this add up over time. -

This is based on many years managing my finances this way allowing me to retire.
The "dollar a week" argument is what leads people to dig holes with car payments, etc. "What's another $40/month?"
Surprised how many here share your perspective-
For $17.50 I"m accomplishing the SAME thing (maintaining the option open to drive) that you'd spend $270 for.
My decision isn't costing you anything -and where is the risk?
Why should I pay the $270? Maintaining an active CDL in my pocket that I am NOT using is worth nothing to me.
Having the option to re-activate my CDL for $17.50, in the small chance that life hits the fan, is worth it to me. -
Asking advice, then complaining you dont like that advice... classy, enjoy retirement

The key to my decision is probability -there is LOW probability that I will reactivate my CDL.
Therefore a very high probability that I save the entire $270. -

Not clear how my responses were determined "complaining"-
I said that I appreciate that risk tolerance varies, and have been explaining the logic for my decision under my personal circumstances.
While doing this, have been trying to get perspective behind the recommendation to spend $270 to accomplish the same thing.
My apologies to you or anyone somehow offended by any of my posts -thought we were having a civil discussion. -
Getting a physical can’t hurt health wise I pay a bit extra and get the full physical when updating CDL one
D.Tibbitt Thanks this. -
Don't trust that it will be "downgraded" when your med card expires, that it will default to a class C license.
My license was "Denied" after I let my med card lapse while on vacation. It wasn't even a valid class C license unless I went in to and "gave up" the class A or produced a medical form to renew status.
You really want to call the DMV or whatever it's called to verify.
