If you still have the old AT&T phone laying around you should be able to use it over seas, or if somone else has an old one laying around that you could borrow, unless you are going to be there for a long time and would rather not go that route. Google the use of AT&T phones overseas and see what you find out, it seems like I remember reading about a fairly cheap work around, but I can't remember the details.

Let's just say it makes for a long night -
I was in WV not long ago and suddenly the 4g was displaying 3g, then 2G in some areas. I called and complained and was told they were updating some towers in the area I was in and the 4G should be up shortly. -
If you are running as hard as you need to so you can afford a 4G data phone, you won't have time to use it enough to justify the cost. If you have time to use it, you won't be able to afford it. Especially since you can't get unlimited data on new contracts through any major carrier that I am aware of. Sprint says they have unlimited data, but check the fine print....4G has a limit, just 3g and slower is unlimited. Save some money, go to Walmart and get Straighttalk. Only 30 or 45 a month, works almost everywhere my AT&T phone worked, just as good call quality, and if money ever gets tight for you it wont mess with your credit score because it is prepaid. Also, there are no early termination fees if you decide you dont want it anymore. Just my 2c.

I also had an unlimited mobile broadband plan for years. When AT&T bought Alltel in my area, I still had unlimited plan, until we needed to update our phones. Then AT&T wanted to change us to a limited plan. So we dumped them. Now I use Pilot/Flying J WiFi for my internet. Yea, it is limited because you have to be at one to use it, but as long as you can get a good signal, it is actually faster than my mobile broadband was, and at 19 bucks or so a month, is a lot cheaper. It is what I am using right now.

Verizon is by far the best out there.
